1996 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa

With the 993, Porsche took a decidedly different path when it came to the Targa model. Gone was the famous roll hoop and targa panel over the front seats in favor of a large glass roof that slid open and concealed itself behind the rear window. The traditional Targa profile reappeared with the current generation 991, with a complex mechanism to handle the removable top. Ever one to favor simplicity, I could only imagine what such a mechanism would cost should it fail years down the road. The 993 Targa had what some would consider a large sunroof which retracted behind the rear window. Some complained of decreased rear visibility due to the glass panel’s tint, but others reveled in the open air enjoyment provided while keeping much of the Carrera’s signature roofline in tact. This 911 Carrera Targa for sale in New York is a one-owner example owned by a member of the Porsche Club of America, showing less than 40,000 miles on the odometer.

1996 Porsche 911 Carrera 2

With a new generation of Porsche’s evergreen sports car, the 911, upon us, now is a good time to look back at a more simple time, when the basic 911 was normally aspirated and air-cooled. This 993 for sale in Arizona is not a low-mileage collector car, but one that has certainly seen some action over two decades but looking no worse for wear. A new 911 will run you almost $90,000. For half of that ask, why not go vintage?

1995 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe

We’ll continue our brief green theme for the week with this Aventurine Green Metallic 1995 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe, located in Florida, with 135,351 miles on it. While many surely exist we do not come across higher mileage examples of the 993 as often as with the other 911 models – not surprising given that they are the youngest of the air-cooled cars – so our grasp of the market and their values once we reach this sort of mileage is a bit less sure. As with any second-hand car those extra miles shouldn’t necessarily dissuade us from keeping it in consideration, we must simply take greater regard of its care over those miles. And as we have seen with many other examples, a higher mileage vehicle that has been well cared for actually can make for a better alternative to a car with fewer miles that has been neglected. What will be different is our approach given the general collector appeal of the 993. That places this car directly in front of us as a driver-quality example and one that an owner should be capable of getting plenty of joy from over the coming years, but without having to pay the typical 993 premiums. For those in search of that final air-cooled magic this 993 may offer great promise.

2003 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S

I always get a kick out of hearing people knock the Porsche 996 911, especially for its looks. The runny egg headlights, and the large taillights make it an easy target, but I’m always quick to remind folks that even the worst looking 911 is still much more enjoyable to look at than the majority of other vehicles. This is especially true in the case of the Carrera 4S which borrows its extra wide, and aggressive look from the 911 Turbo. While reclusive purists will firmly declare that an AWD 911 is the work of the devil, aka. accounts who saw their value, I’m firmly in the camp of open minded individuals who see them as the perfect 4 season vehicle. When everyone else has had to put their toys away for winter, the C4S owner gets to keep playing with his. Charging up snow covered roads on a set of Bizzaks sounds like my idea of a good time, and on top of that, a 911 with a Thule rack is a beautiful thing. If you’re the type to not be too precious about your cars, and use them as they were intended to be used, there’s no need for a winter beater if you drive a C4S, just an extra set of wheels, and tires.

1997 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet

Not everyone likes a flashy car, but I think even those of us who prefer to enjoy our winding roads in less noticeable fashion can still appreciate the vibrancy created by a sports car draped in a pastel color. And perhaps it is precisely that flash that explains why this Blue Turquoise 1997 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet only has 9,471 miles on it. Either way Porsche has consistently made a habit of making its cars available in these sorts of colors and they will always attract a good deal of notice, both on the streets and at cars & coffee as well as on the second-hand market. For second-hand cars the issue as always is just how much is such a color worth and I think this auction attempts to stretch those bounds to test their limits. I love seeing these cars come up for auction: they’re bright and interesting and easily stand apart from the myriad others on the market. They bring a splash of joy to the droves of silver, black, and white we come across so regularly.
