Tuner Tuesday: 1990 Mercedes-Benz 300E AMG 3.4E

Pre-merger AMG products are perhaps the most copied and most sought Mercedes-Benz products from the 1980s. Like many famous works of art, there are plenty of copies, replicas and pieced-together pretenders out there. As with Ruf, Alpina and Hartge – amongst others – you could buy many of the AMG bits originally from authorized dealers and install as many or as few as you’d like. You could also have an authorized dealer install the bits for you. Therefore, the definition of what actually makes a pre-merger AMG a “true” AMG varies depending on interpretation. Most seem to feel that it required at least 3 items to be installed by an authorized dealer of AMG products; a strange definition in some ways, since you could buy, for example, a steering wheel, rear spoiler and wheels – thereby gaining no real performance advantage – but if installed by a dealer, it could be considered an original AMG. Of course, there was much more available than just those items, and the most desirable are the bespoke AMG-engined “Hammer” models with their massive V8s. Not everyone could afford those, so there were lesser models available too:

Tuner Tuesday: 1995 Mercedes-Benz E320 AMG Estate

When enthusiasts of Mercedes-Benz and AMG products think the W124, one car that doesn’t readily come to mind is the E36. Right at the end of the W124 production run and beginning of the in-house AMG marriage to Daimler-Benz, a special car was produced – and amazingly, it wasn’t the 500E. The E36 received typical AMG updates like the wheels, suspension and body-kit; a recipe we’re used to. But under the hood was a 24V inline-6 that was shared with the W202 C36 AMG, good for 270-odd horsepower and it could be mated to a manual transmission. It was also available in 4 versions; sedan, coupe, convertible and – you guessed it, Estate wagon form. They’re exceedingly rare to find, and this isn’t one. But it does have some of the key details – and unlike earlier’s AMG imposter, here’s a W124 AMG replica that pulls off the look perfectly:

1995 Mercedes-Benz C36 AMG with 48,000 Miles – REVISIT

The 1995 Mercedes-Benz C36 AMG we featured last month is back up for sale, it’s price having been lowered by $1,000. Some may prefer the M badged cars from Munich, but these early post-merger AMGs are an interesting and rare alternative to the M3s of the era.

For as long as I can remember, the sign that one “made” it was a Mercedes-Benz, and specifically a convertible one. Sure, if you wanted to go fast you bought a Porsche, and if you wanted to go in the snow you bought an Audi – or if you wanted to do what everyone else on Wall Street did, you bought a BMW. But there was a royal air about Mercedes-Benz models that the others couldn’t really capture. Perhaps it was the long and storied history of one of the most significant automobile manufacturers in the world – a car company that had been selling the best cars in the world to the stars since the 1930s. Perhaps it was the incredible build quality of many of their models; cars not designed to a price point, but to an engineering standard unsurpassed anywhere in the world. Or perhaps it was just simply that the cars Mercedes-Benz managed to make you feel incredibly special, incredibly pampered and yet not be ostentatious or overstated. In truth, it’s probably a little bit of each, and few cars embody this combination of qualities quite as well as the W124 Mercedes-Benz did. You could have economic diesels, versatile estates, sporty V8 monsters, or enjoy the limitless sky the cabriolet version offered you:
