1983 Mercedes-Benz 500SEL AMG

Mercedes-Benz was the company that basically invented the idea of a super sedan with the 300SEL 6.3 back in the mid 1960s. Interesting, then, that the 300SEL 6.3 was fielded in motor racing by a group of ex-Mercedes engineers who founded the now famous tuning arm, AMG. Fast-forward to the 1980s and AMG was in the business of engine performance, wheels and body kits. The 500SEL was a W126 that was never offered officially in the US market, but a fair amount made their way to these shores through grey market importing. This 1983 example has a good bit of the AMG treatment, from engine modifications to the famous Penta wheels. For a person like myself who grew up in the 1980s, this car brings back a lot of memories of those posters I’d have on my bedroom wall of all the wild cars from that decade.

1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SE Coupe

Walking down the street this week I came across a rather uncanny site, a 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SE 3.5 Coupe. Sitting nonchalantly on a city street amongst dreary modern day machinery, it brought a smile to my face to know someone is intrepid enough to use such a majestic automobile in an urban environment. The car scene is pretty dead around the Washington, DC area, which is part of the reason I’m looking to get out of here as soon as I can. Everyone here is so fixated on politics and their job that it can be hard finding fellow petrolheads to connect with. Nevertheless, you do see some classics wandering about on the roads from time to time. Sadly I didn’t get a chance to chat the owner up in this case.

This 1970 280SE we see here for sale in California isn’t of the V8 variety, but shares the low grille look of the aforementioned 3.5 with a striking two tone blue and white color combination over a sumptuous blue leather interior. These W111 coupes were some of the last hand-built Mercedes-Benzes to leave the factory and considering what you spend for similar vintage W113 SLs these days, these six-cylinder coupes represent a bit of a relative bargain for the collector.

1995 Mercedes-Benz E320 Cabriolet

When talking import convertibles from the 1990s, the conversation has to start with a Mercedes-Benz. Whether it’s the SL, E-Class, or even the SLK, Mercedes ruled the luxury droptop market from the day MC Hammer told us we couldn’t touch this, to the day we all realized computers could in fact count past 2000. Neither Audi, nor BMW had a competitor for the SL or E-Class, the closest competition came from Sweden in the form of the SAAB 900 convertible. As is usually the case with SAAB, the car was popular within a niche market, whereas Mercedes’ convertibles cemented themselves in pop culture again and again. As wonderful as the R129 SL is, I’ve always favored the W124 cabriolet over it, and I never much cared for the SLK. Among the many great drop tops to come out of Stuttgart, I’d place the ’92-’97 E-Class in the top five. It perfectly embodies what Mercedes was all about when they were at their best, comfort, luxury, understated style. Nothing about the W124 cries out for attention, the design simply draws you in because it’s timeless. Mercedes hadn’t offered such a car since the ’71 280SE, and the return of a two door, four seat convertible was welcomed by consumers with open wallets. Now here we are 20 years later and the W124 cabriolet is still turning heads, still commanding a pretty premium. This Brilliant Emerald over Parchment leather example look to be a very solid example, but is it worth classic 911 money?

1975 Mercedes-Benz 280SLC

For as long lived as the R107 SL and C107 SLC were, Mercedes-Benz never offered these roadsters and coupes in six-cylinder form in the US market. That’s rather curious, given the fuel crunch that was in full swing during this cars production run. Plenty of private importers went and had a go, bringing the 280SL and SLC into the before legislators stepped in and curbed gray market imports. Now that all R107 and C107 models are eligible for import as they are more than 25 years old, one can take their pick from any number of six-cylinder SLs and SLCs out there for sale abroad. Luckily, this 280SLC for sale in New Jersey is already here, offering the classic Mercedes buyer something a bit different than your usual large-bumpered, sealed beam headlamp adorned SLC.

1966 Mercedes-Benz 230S

The Mercedes-Benz Fintails of the 1950s and 1960s was a rather daring design for a company noted for its adherence to traditional design. This styling hallmark would live on through the late 1960s and could be considered the grandfather to the modern day E-class sedan. The 230S we see here was one of the later expressions of the W111 design and one that found its way into my father’s garage in the 1970s. This black example for sale in New York is almost identical to my father’s car, save for the fact that his was a ’67 with a 4-speed manual on the floor and was equipped with a saddle tan MB-Tex interior.
