1993 Mercedes-Benz 500E

Every decade there is a handful of cars that arrive on the scene that have the right stuff to permanently leave a mark on the automotive landscape. The Mercedes-Benz 300SL, Mk1 Volkswagen GTI and E30 BMW M3 are but a handful of motors that have shifted over into the icon category. Their respective manufacturers have tried to rekindle the magic of these vehicles over the years, much to their credit, but somehow, these cars will be frozen in time as some of the greats. This is the case with this car, the W124 Mercedes-Benz 500E/E500. Mercedes has come out with a number of AMG tuned E class sedans in the past two decades, but none seems to capture the hearts and minds like this super sedan with Porsche DNA. Interestingly enough, another icon of the 1990s was built in the same factory as this car, right after 500E/E500 production ended: the Audi RS2 Avant.

This particular 500E for sale in Georgia belies its age and the miles it has covered, looking truly immaculate in Brilliant Silver.

1979 Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9

It’s been a while since we saw Paul’s near perfect Silver Euro 450SEL 6.9 during V8 week last fall. These super-sedans established a trend Mercedes-Benz continues today; stuffing the largest V8 they can find into the largest sedan they can build. For many, it’s a winning combination – while the 6.9 was no slalom-assassin, there was simply nothing else that came close to this combination in the 1970s. Remember, this was the time period where the fastest Audi had around 113 horsepower in Europe. Then there was BMW, producing the 733 which made the Audi look downright slow but was still nearly 100hp shy of the Mercedes. But 1979 signaled the end of an era and the start of a new one, with two turbocharged sedans introduced signaling the future: Audi would release the 200 5T Turbo and BMW the 745i Turbo, and while both still couldn’t come close to the power output of the 6.9 they were much more efficient, modern motors. It wasn’t just the era of the giant motor that was on its way out, either, as the aging W116 was also on the verge of being retired in favor of the newer and more stylish W126 – a car that subsequently has become such a legend even in its own time. It’s easy therefore to discount the importance and significance of a car like the 6.9, but what it did was show us what would happen when engineers dared to let their hair down. Today there’s a lower mile example on Ebay:

1989 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16

Some forbidden fruit today, coming to us from Japan via Canada. It’s the beefier 2.5 Cosworth that we never got in the US, bringing with it dual timing chains and 17 extra horsepower. The optioned automatic gearbox is interesting as most 190E 16s came with a dogleg 5-speed to keep the racy feel. The 2.5-liter 16-valve should keep things at a nice pace though, even if it needs some love. The whole car needs some attention, from a few interior and exterior blemishes to the too-low suspension. Sitting on Lorinser monoblocks, though, it’s hard to deny the appeal of this E30 M3 counterpart, especially when you take into account that it will cost at least 75% less than the Bimmer.

1976 Mercedes-Benz 450SL

The problem with classic cars at times is they aren’t that agreeable to live with on a regular basis. Whether its adjusting carburetors, leaky convertible tops or dealing with less than adequate braking capabilities, there’s always going to be a bit of compromise. Of all the classics, however, older Mercedes-Benzes are some of the best that can blend in with modern motoring. Timeless looks with safety and performance to keep up with modern times makes cars like this 450SL from the mid 1970s an attractive piece. This one for sale in Florida has just under 60,000 miles and wears it’s original paint over a restored interior.
