1999 Mercedes-Benz S600

One of the more interesting subsects of the automotive world are cars that seemingly are common, but in reality extremely rare. If you see a Ferrari F40 driving down the street or parked on a lawn somewhere, you have a pretty good idea that is a rare car. A 1999 Mercedes-Benz S600 parked at the grocery store? You can find those anywhere, right? That would be wrong. Very wrong.

The W140 chassis was wrapping up in 1999 as Mercedes already launched their new flagship W220 all over Europe. So whatever leftover cars they had came to the US to sell off. Turns out they didn’t have many of the M120 V12s to offer up. Just 14 S600 sedans and 15 CL600 coupes were produced for the 1999 model year. That is it! A generation that saw 432,732 examples built came down to a final 29 cars. Guess what we have today?

2003 Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG

Believe it or not, March is here. Funny to say that since it happens every year, but spring fever is going to get hot and heavy. Especially since, well, you know the drill. With spring, comes convertible season. At least for us who live anywhere else but California and Florida. The options are pretty wide when you are looking for top down cars, but dollar for dollar, the R230 SL55 AMG continues to be one the best values out there. As expected, most of these don’t have many miles on them. Even with that, $25,000 buys you a decent example. However, this 2003 up for sale in Florida has an impressive 98,000 miles. Even better? It’s from the original owner.

2020 Mercedes-AMG E63 S

Ever since the early 1990s, Mercedes-Benz has produced an E-Class that can punch above its weight class. Cool to think about in the grand scheme of things seeing as it is capable as a seven-day a week daily driver, but also a supercar in disguise that can get you to 60 mph in the low three second range. Add in a really nice interior and industry-standard tech like some automatous driving aids, and it is tough to argue against. That is no different with the current generation W213 and it sure seems like that won’t be changing, even with sedans fading away and SUV-type vehicles being the choice of the masses.

Today, I have a 2020 E63 S up for sale in Chicago that you might of noticed is not in the typical black/silver/grey/white. This is actually China Blue and was special order as part of Mercedes’ Designo Manufaktur program that will let you put a custom color for $7,500. This was previously limited to just the G-Glass, but now is available on the E-Class, S-Class, and AMG GT. Mercedes must have been jealous of all the Paint to Sample cars running around across town and decided they would too like to make a bunch of money from owners who need to be different.

2006 Maybach 57 S

I promise this is the last Maybach for a while. I also promise this one is worth it. This the 57 S. The standard wheelbase car, if you could call this thing standard, but with a 6.0-liter M285 twin-turbo V12 in place of the same M285 as we get on the 57, but with an extra half a liter. It also rides a half inch lower and was standard on 20″ wheels. Maybach says the S stands for Special, I always looked at it as Sport, but you can make your own call. Of course it was ungodly expensive at over $370,000, and now it is literally worth a fraction of that. However, if you were expecting the normal Maybach interior of boring beige leather and a bunch of fake wood, you would be wrong. Very wrong.

2021 Mercedes-Maybach GLS600

Last week’s 2004 Maybach 62 sure had some strong opinions, and I really enjoy that. It seems that most were in agreement it is still overpriced even at a fraction of the price. The story was written and the book is closed as the stand-alone Maybach brand was not long for the world and has now morphed into the sub-brand that we see today. From a financial perspective, Mercedes was smart to go that way. Now, all they have to do is take their regular production models, add some fancy trimmings and wheels, throw some Maybach badges on it, and double the price. Sounds like a plan!

This the Mercedes-Maybach GLS600. It is basically just what I explained. It is a full-sized GLS with a different grill, some special wheels, and a rear seating are nicer than most houses. Well, probably not nicer than the houses of people who end up buying these, but you get what I’m saying. It isn’t too flashy, because those who want flashy buying Rolls-Royce Cullinans. That has always been the deal with Maybach. Rolls-Royce for the people who want to be seen, Maybach for those who don’t. Although just because it isn’t as flashy, doesn’t mean it is any cheaper.
