1984 Porsche 930 Coupe

With time many things can be mended. So just because a car was not available in our market during its years of production doesn’t mean that those same cars will never be available. Such is the case with the Porsche 930, which took a hiatus from US shores beginning in 1980 only to return in 1986. For fans of Porsche’s top model those years must have seemed an eternity. All we had were posters and our imagination. European owners suffered no such issues and by 1984 the 930 was sending 330 hp to those wide rear tires, making for pulse-quickening performance that required constant attention and offered numerous rewards for those capable of exploiting its massive performance potential. RoW cars possess a certain allure to many buyers as they possess a uniqueness that is difficult to capture and that allure always is enhanced when the car in question was not available in the US market. Thankfully the days of the 930’s absence have passed and those European models now can be found Stateside along with many examples of the original US market cars. Here we have one such European example: a Guards Red 1984 Porsche 930 Coupe, located in New York, with just 34,721 miles on it.

1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet

1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet

As we neared the final year of the 3.2 Carrera, which would also be the final year of the classic 911 design, Porsche released a couple special models as a send-off (or for the cynical as a way of selling off a few extra chassis) for the car that had quickly become the staple of the brand. But even with those special editions it is to the standard models that frequently we return with such joy. For that is where the variation lies and is most apparent. Here we have another example of an interesting color combination that we rarely come across, but which provides excellent vitality to even an older car: a Velvet Red 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet, located in Florida, with a Burgundy leather interior and 58,000 miles on it. While today the 911 Cabriolet seems as common as any other model, at the time of the 3.2 Carrera’s departure it had only been around a little more than 5 years, with the Carrera itself being the first model to have a Cabriolet during its entire model run. That doesn’t necessarily make these especially rare or anything like that, but this is the first model where we begin to see an evolution of the design and, of course, for those particularly interested in the classic 911 it would be the most advanced on the market.

1992 Porsche 911 Carrera RS

1992 Porsche 911 Carrera RS

Edit 8/24/2017: A little over two years later, this RS has resurfaced on eBay with 70 more miles and about the same $400,000 asking price.

Another week, another wonderful 964 Carrera RS. This time, however, we’ve gone a little more aggressive in the color department with a Rubystone Red (Sternrubin) 1992 Porsche 911 Carrera RS with contrasting interior and just 19,919 miles on it. I recall that we featured a Rubystone 964 Turbo a while back and that 911 had a Grey interior that, frankly, was entirely unbefitting of the dynamism of the exterior. We have no such problem here as the black interior with purple and violet seat inserts provides the right balance of flash and subdued character that highlights, but doesn’t overshadow, that exterior. Inside or out, there should be no mistaking what this car is.

1977 Porsche 924

1977 Porsche 924

This may shock you, but sometimes the cars we write up aren’t all that they seem to be. Let’s take today’s 924 for example; it appears to be a reasonably lower miles, good overall condition example of the original 924. A car considerably more sporty than contemporary Volkswagens, it nonetheless hasn’t gained nearly the following of the cars from Wolfsburg and is still – in general – the redheaded, illegitimate and unwanted child in the Porsche world. As such, though clean examples of early 924s pop up from time to time, they’re generally survivors rather than restored examples. The sheer mass of good condition survivors, though, should perhaps point towards the enduring appeal of the clean original watercooled 4-cylinder Porsche – something we’re likely to see return before long. So, there’s the potential that this is both a good collector and driver on a budget:

1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe – Paint to Sample

Porsche’s paint-to-sample option provides a wide of array of choices to suit just about any customer’s color preferences. One common choice chosen by buyers is simply to use a color Porsche has made available in previous years or on other models, but that is not available on the model the buyer has chosen. Still, it can be difficult to know with certainty what color a paint-to-sample car actually is as the L999 and L998 paint codes, for metallic and non-metallic respectively, themselves tell us little about the color. It appears that the 911 we see here falls into just such a category. The seller suggests the color could be Kalahari Beige, an option available at that time for the 924 and 944, or it could be White Gold Metallic. Since White Gold Metallic was an available color on the 911 itself in 1986 that would lead me to believe that is not the case. In many cases the actual color code can be found on a separate sticker on the driver’s side fender, but the seller hasn’t made clear that is the case with this car. Regardless, any paint-to-sample Porsche is somewhat of a rarity and in the world of air-cooled 911s that always makes them just that little bit more desirable. The particular example we see here, a 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe, located in Los Angeles, also has a really nicely contrasting Champagne and Brown leather interior, quite reasonable mileage for its age, and is on auction with no reserve.
