Wagon Week: 1995 Audi RS2 Avant

Often when we come across a car like this, we’re foaming at the mouth to write about how cool it is, how rare it is, and so on. This time around I think I’ll take a different approach, because most of our readership already knows what they’re looking at. So rather than tell everyone what they already know I’m going to take a Letterman approach to this and offer up…

Top 10 Reasons you should not buy this car:

10.  Nogaro Blue is too bright for you.
9.  The acceleration when you hit boost hurts your neck.
8.  You think that wagons are for soccer moms.
7.  You prefer to get stuck in the snow, so quattro is pointless.
6.  You’re a firm believer in speed limits.
5.  That turbo thingy makes too much noise.
4.  The recaro seats are too confining, you prefer to slide around a bit.
3.  Clark Griswolds family truckster is your idea of a dream wagon.
2.  Manual transmissions are way too much work.
1.  You’re currently cross shopping this with a Prius.

Five doors, manual 6-speed, estate, petrol, 155,256 miles, blue, MOT-10-2013. An outstanding example of these fantastic Audis with a Porsche pedigree. Comprehensive service history, Audi main dealer until 133,000 and specialist thereafter with huge file of invoices and recent timing belt change. Must be viewed. Please call Kenny Dunn for further details 0131 475 9111. £11,995

With all of the reasons not to buy this car, there is only one main reason TO buy it…because it’s awesome. These cars are the future collectables from the Audi stable, second only to the UrQuattros, and SWB Sport Quattros. Given that these will be ready for legal import in to the US in 2020, it’s a good idea to start saving now, as these will only appreciate in value.

Wagon Week: 1995 Audi RS2 Avant

With all this talk about fast Audi wagons, where did this mayhem start? Right here. Even though the BMW M5 Touring arrived on the scene first, the Audi RS2 took the idea of a sports wagon and knocked it out of the park. Assembled at the same Porsche factory as the legendary Mercedes W124 500E/E500, this Audi 80 Avant on steroids offered impressive performance, even by today’s standards. With 311 bhp on tap from the 2.2 liter, 20 valve five cylinder turbo engine, acceleration was, to put it mildly, brisk. Top speed was 166 mph and Autocar magazine tested an RS2 and found that 0-30 mph took 1.5 seconds, which bested the McLaren F1. All this power was harnessed by a 6-speed manual transmission and put to the ground via Audi’s renowned Quattro four-wheel drive system.

While sold in relatively few markets, the RS2 has become a cult car around the world and is valued accordingly. This RS2 for sale in Portugal is a Quattro lover’s dream in RS Blue with just over 50,000 miles.

Car in excellent condition, totally original. It has only 85,000 km, always well maintained, noting that it is a limited edition of 2,200 units, it was born of a partnership between Audi and Porsche, the first version Audi RS.

Every day, I sit at my desk at home and longingly gaze at the 1:18 scale model of this very Audi, in this exact color. Of all the cars I wax poetic about here on GCFSB, this is one of my two favorite cars that I could see spending the rest of my life with (the other being a 911 Carrera 3.2). Those RS enthusiasts in the US will have to wait another six years to get their hands on one of these, but there are a few knocking around up in Canada, as they have a less restrictive 15 year importation rule.

I’m heading to Portugal on vacation in less than two weeks. For the back half of my trip, I will be be driving from the northern part of the country, where my family is from, to Lisbon. Leiria is a town that is about halfway into that journey, roughly 20 kilometers off the coast and not too far from the IP1 super highway. If I have spare time that day, I may have to make a quick stop to try and snag a test drive. They say you should never meet your heroes. But for some reason, I know that once I get behind the wheel of this thing, I’ll be exhausting all my brain power in an effort to figure out a way to make it mine.

1994 Audi RS2

In my spare time, I collect 1:18 scale model cars. Living in an urban area with limited parking, it’s a way of enjoying some of my favorite vehicles on a smaller scale. One recent acquisition to my collection was an Audi RS2 made by a specialty manufacturer out of France. I’ve always admired this collaboration between Audi and Porsche, especially when they are painted in the iconic Nogaro blue. In another six years, these cars will begin to be legal for importation into the US. Unfortunately, by that time the prices on these cars will surely have skyrocketed. That’s not at all surprising, given a short two year production run with under 3,000 produced.

This RS2 for sale in Barcelona was treated to a recent restoration to the tune of over €20,000.

1994 Audi RS2 for sale on Mobile.de

Audi RS2 totally restored in December 2011. New engine with 9500 km (current 210,000). Newly painted. Aesthetically perfect. I have the invoices of repair for value (+20000 Euros). Brakes 8 calipers and rims 18″ Porsche 993 turbo with Bridgestone 235/35/18. Exhaust MTM. Metallic catalyst 200. Xenon kit. Bluetooth.

While it doesn’t wear its original Porsche Cup wheels, the 993 Turbo style wheels don’t look out of place on this fast estate. At over $30,000 USD equivalent, this car isn’t for everyone. For some, it is a drop in the bucket considering the combination of performance and practicality. Look up Q ship in the dictionary, and this five-door, 311 horsepower beast with Porsche DNA would fit the profile.

Theme Week: 1995 Audi RS2

The RS2 was built on Audi’s 80 Avant; it was Audi’s first “RS” vehicle, and the first of their long line of high-performance wagons.  The RS2 was a joint effort between Audi and Porsche, and represented some of the best efforts from both camps.

While most of the car came from the Audi parts bin, the mad scientists at Porsche transformed the 230bhp Audi 2.2l inline 5 cylinder turbo engine in to a 311bhp fire breather with the addition of bigger turbo, larger fuel injectors, a hotter cam, and remapped ECU.  The power was planted to the road through a 6 speed gear box, and Audi’s legendary quattro with locking differential.  The suspension was revised with Bilstein shocks and larger sway bars.  To bring this monster to a halt, Porsche donated the brakes from the Porsche 968 Club Sport.

These cars are extremely rare, with only 2891 examples built from 1994 to 1995.  For the longest time, to own one in North America was merely a dream for Audi enthusiasts, but that did not stop the RS2 from developing a strong cult following over here.  Luckily there are enthusiasts like the owner of this Volcano Black beauty for sale in Quebec, Canada to bring cars like this to our shores.

With less than 3000 built, and having never being offered in North America this car is certainly hard to come by, and even harder to slap a value on.  This beautiful example has only 84,000 kms (52,195 miles) on the clock, and the owner has lovingly restored this car to great original condition.  On most cars of its age, these are great selling points, but this is an Audi RS2…in North America, if you want one of these, it’s not like you can just move on to the next one.  This car is for sale for $32,000, and to be honest, this car is worth every penny.  This is a car that I absolutely would love to own, which makes me wonder…what are kidneys selling for on the black market these days?

1987 VW Quantum for sale on eBay

I felt I was being a little too Bavarian-centric with my first posts, then all Porsches earlier this week, so I went looking for a good VW.  My oh my, did I choose the right day to look for Volkswagens!  Quantums are a rare breed in general.  The Passat progenitor had the simple lines of 80s VWs and was available with Syncro, the best named of all 4WD systems.  With Syncro it came with the Audi-sourced 5 cylinder.  Revered more for their capability than their looks, many of this generation are more 4WD beaters than clean machines.  This ECS Tuning Quantum bucks the trend and more, with a clean white exterior and a well-modified Ur-Quattro drivetrain conversion (!!!).

Some of the modifications from the listing:

THIS QUANTUM HAS HAD AN AUDI UR QUATTRO DRIVETRAIN CONVERSION.  DETAILS INCLUDE A SPECIAL BUILD HIGH COMPRESSION MC CODE AUDI SPORT 5-CYLINDER TURBO, AUDI SPORT INTERNALS, CUSTOM CRANKSHART, LARGER OIL PUMP AND COOLER, 411 GEARS WITH DUAL LOCKING DIFFS, SACHS RACING CLUTCH, NEW HYDRUALIC BRAKES, LARGER MASTER CYLINDER, WILLWOOD BRAKES WITH HAWK HPS PADS, POWDER COATER REAR CALIPERS, FULL GROUND CONTROL COIL OVER SET UP (POSSIBLY THE ONLY ONE IN THE US), ALL NEW POLY CONTROL ARMS, BATTERY RELOCATED TO REAR, BIGGER SECONDARY WATER PUMP, FULL STAINLESS EXHAUST (NO CAT), FULL STAINLESS DOWNPIPE FOR RS2 HYBRID KKK TURBO, RS2 HYBRID TURBO, CUSTOM SPORT QUATTRO WASTE GATE, CUSTOM BOOST PIPING, SEARCO INTERCOOLER, HKS SUPER SEQQUENTIAL BOV, AUDI SPORT CIS FUEL SYSTEM WITH ADJUSTABLE PRESSURE FOR DIFFERENT PUMPS, MIM 17 INCH WHEELS, ECLIPSE SOUND SYSTEM, BOOST GUAGE, MOMO STEERING WHEEL, AUDI SPORT INTAKE MANIFOLD, AUDI SPORT EXHAUST MANIFOLD (PORT MATCHED), HI REV VAVLE SPRINGS, CUSTOM HEAD WORK AND MUCH, MUCH MORE.

This really is an awesome car. Amazing drivetrain conversion, clean exterior, and only 72k miles. It could use some cleaner wheels and more tire (and ditch the nauseating hood pins), but hot damn. RS2 turbos? Wilwood brakes? Locking diffs? Forget that S4 fetish of mine; I want an RS2 Quantum!
