2002 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S

Sometimes there is more to the story than we know. Perhaps it is some funny business behind the scenes, a sale that really didn’t happen, or just some straight-up fraud. Today’s car, a 2002 Porsche 911 Carrera 4s, might not be any of those things, but something isn’t adding up here.

I thought I recognized this car and turns out I did as it was recently sold at Gooding & Co. Amelia Island auction back in early March as part of the late-Rudy “Mr. 993” Mancinas collection. It was a fairly nice 996 C4S, but had a good number of miles on it at nearly 86,000. What is an early C4S with that many miles worth? Usually in that $40,000-50,000 range for a nicer color and cool options like this. Even Gooding estimated $40,000 – $60,000. Totally reasonable. What did end up selling for? $72,800. Yikes. That is 996 Turbo money easily. Now, a month later, the car is back up for sale in Charlotte, North Carolina for the price of $70,820. Huh?

1999 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe

Earlier this week I came across a Porsche Cayman S finished in the wonderful Forest Green Metallic. As much as I wanted to jump all over it, a bunch of things added up that probably had me passing on it. As luck would have it, a really early 996 happen to pop up for sale in upstate New York that of course had me taking a closer look. It is your typical 1999 Carrera 2 with the “fried egg” headlights, orange taillights, and maybe not the most opulent interior ever. Still, the value you can get from a 996.1 is there, so why not make the best of it with one in a good color combo?

2000 Porsche Boxster S Turbo

If you’re at all like me, you look at a lot of internet car advertisements. One of my favorite subset hobbies is then looking for ridiculous claims within those ads – “Only one ever made”, “One of a kind”, “Fastest car in the world” – you know the gig. They’re always good for a chuckle and make you wonder just what the seller was thinking. Sometimes, though, those ads show a general lack of knowledge about the vehicle in question; for example, listing any BMW as having a “V6” or all older Audis as “quattro” models. So you can imagine my delight when I ran across today’s 2000 Boxster S – typical Ebay auction-house seller photos and no extensive description, but there in the title in bold letter all caps was “TURBO”. “Ha!”, I thought, “Gotcha!” as I scrolled down the page to confirm my suspicion that this seller knew little to nothing in comparison to my vast unassailable automotive knowledge. But halfway though the photos I came across an image of the the rear spoiler deployed with the words “Turbo Kraft” stenciled on. Hmm, still not proof of a turbo, just poor taste. It was a little further down that I was both disappointed to be wrong and excited to see the image of a shiny turbo sitting in the engine bay. So take a look at something you’re probably not familiar with – the turbocharged Boxster S:
