1987 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3

$_4 (1)

I’ve have a love for all things basic. Perhaps its my adherence to a minimalist lifestyle. I can’t help but get inspired by certain modern art galleries I’ve visited and translate those ideas to interior design. As a result, the ideal living room for me consists of four while walls, a concrete or white marble floor and one stainless steel side chair. With a very thin flat screen TV hanging on the wall, of course. Maybe it seems extreme, maybe those with children will laugh at me, but clutter unnerves me.

Looking through the online brochures of the 2015 Mercedes-Benz lineup, I see a lot of automotive clutter. Certain vehicles seem a bit out of place, others seem overtly festooned with features I don’t need or want. This 1987 190E 2.3 for sale in California, though, is everything I need in a car and nothing I don’t, short of maybe a bit more power. For someone who wants a usable commuter with a touch of class, there’s few better options.

1985 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16V

Just the other day, Paul looked at a 1985 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16V in Germany, commenting on how in spite of a long race history in the DTM, prices on even very clean examples of these venerable W201 sport sedans have not increased anywhere as close as the BMW M3 or even the Audi Quattro. For enthusiasts, that’s a good thing since it’s one of the few affordable super-sedans of the 1980s that’s left. Performance from the 190E fell in between the Audi and BMW in most conditions, but today a pretty clean example can be had for only a fraction of the others:

1985 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16

Having looked at a Mercedes-Benz 500SLCyesterday, it got me contemplating what other homologation specials are out there carrying the Three Pointed Star. The next logical car in the company’s timeline was the 190E 2.3-16. Originally developed to go rallying, the Audi Quattro suddenly deemed the Baby Benz a bit uncompetitive, so they went racing in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft, or DTM series, instead. This new, fast 190 also set twelve endurance records at the Nardo testing facility in Italy, with three cars recording a combined average speed of just over 154 mph over the 50,000 km test. This example for sale in Northwest Germany has covered only 28,000 km more over its lifetime, and since it is more than 25 years old, qualifies for import to US shores.

1989 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evo I

When the Mercedes-Benz 190E arrived on the scene in the early 1980s, the notion of such a small car from the house of the Three Pointed Star seemed far fetched. Even more so was when the Cosworth-tuned 190E 2.3-16 debuted. Here was a car that was originally designed for rallying but wound up competing in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) series, equipped with a twin cam four cylinder engine, available 5-speed manual gearbox with dog leg first gear and a full on bodykit. Quite un-Mercedes like.

The US market would see the 190E 2.3-16 for just a few years, but the evolution of the breed would continue on in Europe right up to the end of the production run, with a 2.5 liter engine and Evolution models. This 190E 2.5-16 Evo for sale in The Netherlands was brought to our attention by our reader Walker and is now legal to import to the US. Just over 500 were produced to comply with DTM homologation regulations, with and engine that revved higher and had improved top end power. While not as aggressive as the Evo 2 that would follow up this act, those who know about these special 190Es will recognize this car’s awesomeness in an instant.

Tuner Tuesday Zender Edition: Tuner Accessories Roundup

Zender is one of those names that I really identify with the 1980s. While they continued on after, the real height of Zender’s popularity seemed to be in the 1980s. Body kits, wheels and even steering wheels ultimately resulted in a tuning firm that was able to produce a few of their own show cars; remember the Zender Fact 4 and Vision? Today there are a host of real and copy Zender pieces floating around – here’s a sampling of what I was able to find on Ebay. While the styling may be a bit polarizing, it’s hard to deny that Zender offered customers something unique and having period detail pieces like these can really set your car apart if done properly:
