Wednesday Wheels: Wheels for the People from Volkswagen

Although Volkswagen may have come from humble roots and it’s lack of wheel choices through the 1980s showed it, recent generations of the people’s car have had many options to match their climbing price tags. Indeed, whereas Volkswagen had yet to equip a car with 16″ wheels in the year 1999, the more recent offerings have really set Volkswagen apart from the competition with good looks, aggressive style and a markedly upscale feel. I’ll start with the Passat CC 17″ wheels known as “Spa”:

I can’t say that I like black wheels or the CC all that much, but 700$ for some brand new OEM wheels including centercaps is a pretty stellar deal. These would certainly dress up any of the Passat or later Golf/Rabbit/Jetta models. Not a fan of black and looking for something a little bigger? How about my favorites, the R32 “Omanyt”:

Year: 2008
Model: VW Omanyt
Diameter: 18″
Width: 7.5″
Bolt Pattern: 5 x 112
Offset: ET 51
Condition: Used
Tires: Included Continental Extreme Contact 225-40-18

Pictures show a complete set of 4 wheels and tires. These wheels are the original Omanyts from the 2008 Golf R32. Only 5,000 made. Very limited and unique wheels. I am selling both the rims and the tires together. The tires are brand new, with about 400 miles on them now. The tires are Falken 612’s 225/40/18. These wheels go for about $454 each. You can find their retail price in the ECS TUNING website under OEM Alloy wheels and check their price to confirm, I’m unable to post link as ebay doesn’t allow it, but you can go check for yourself.

The price of $1150 is for all 4 wheels (including tires).

I love the Omanyts, they just look spectacular. The fluted polished edges are a nice touch you don’t notice until you’re close up. Downside is that they’re heavy – really, really heavy, and they seem to suffer a lot of curb scuffing. This set looks pretty presentable and has tires, a bonus. Rather get into something a little more rare? How about these BBS-made Phaeton “Challenge” wheels:

Year: 2006
Model: VW Challenge
Diameter: 18″
Width: 8.5″
Bolt Pattern: 5 x 112

The tires don’t look grand, the wheels have some wear, but at under $1,000 I can’t say I’ve seen a set of these for less money. Like most of the Phaeton wheels they’re pretty highly sought after as a mod for the lower models. The Challenge is one of the better looking wheels on the Phaeton, but would make any Passat look the part too, with an aggressive, chunky look. Need something smaller and a little more classic? How about some new Zender Turbos?

Rare, rare, rare. These are hard wheels to come by. They’re not to everyone’s taste, true, but as a period piece they’d look fantastic on an Audi or B5 Passat. At $1,000, they even seem to be priced quite reasonably considering the market on some older tuner BMW and Porsche wheels – which range in the mid-thousands. I’m trying to get the owner of that Mars Red 20V Quattro to snap them up; I think they’re perfect for that car! Are you a TT, Mk.4 Golf or Jetta driver? There are some great options for you, too – like these New Beetle Turbo “Delta” wheels:

Year: 2002-2005

ALL WHEELS HAVE BEEN SPIN TESTED AND ARE GUARANTEED TO SPIN STRAIGHT AND TRUE!!

I always thought these looked pretty darn cool; the reverse 5 spoke is an interesting concept and they made it work. If you squint you can even see hints of the Fuchs wheels from Porsches in this design. Whatever you put it on, you’d certainly set it apart, and the price is pretty compelling. Maybe you have a set of alloys and just need a freshen up? How about some new centercaps?

Volkswagen centercaps seem to use just enough metal to corrode and just enough plastic to fall out when you hit a big bump. They’re cheap to replace, despite what nearly every used Ebay car dealer would make you think (they never put them on!). As a finishing touch, they really can quickly clean up your wheels on a tight budget.

Which are your favorites and what would you like to see?

1988 BMW M5 Euro Conversion

Some people just want what they can’t have. European car fans have a strong claim to this stance, as the discrepancies between Euro and US offerings are rarely in our favor. Even when models were offered here, the initial response to NHTSA bumper mandates brought large bumpers that rub a lot of people the wrong way. I love my “diving boards” on my E28, but some just can’t handle it and lop them off and push the bumpers back in. Today we feature a clean M5 with this look, augmented with some BBS and Zender valences as well, which do a decent job of continuing the standard BMW aesthetics. Euro conversions aren’t very common, so when they come up it’s worth noting.

1988 BMW M5 Euro Conversion for sale on eBay

Up for sale is my beautiful 1988 M5. The car has been perfectly converted to euro (euro headlights, grille, bumpers and body kit). It has a front BBS valance, rear Zender valance and Zender side skirt. Paint is in pretty good shape and shines very good. Interior of the car is also in very good shape as you can see in pictures, dash has 2 very small cracks about an inch long each. I recently installed 4 Bilstein shocks and struts and also H&R SPRINGS. Engine runs very strong and smooth. There are no leak of any kind. Spark plugs, fuel filter, valve cover gasket were just replaced. Transmission shifts very smooth and clutch also feels very strong. It has a custom exhaust system that sound very nice.

It does not have any rust and also have all VIN tags. All power door locks and windows and other electric parts are in good working condition.(sunroof is not working and power antenna goes half a way). The car also comes with a set of style 5 BBs rims that are in mint condition. I am selling a 25 year old car that is in very good condition but its a used car and is being sold as is.

Again, high-mileage M5s need to be examined with a discerning eye. It is a pretty copy though and the interior is in good shape for 223k miles. The Euro conversion is drawing a lot of interest, with 21 bids pushing it up to over $10,000, but the reserve still isn’t met. I know a lot of work goes into this conversion, but the non-original nature and aftermarket add-ons don’t add a ton of value for me, leaving this as a clean but high-mileage M5. If you must have a Euro-bumpered M5, buying one already converted will save you time and frustration, but rebuilding an S38 will cause more. For me, this M5 is already dangerously close to its max worth – but I’m a US-bumper fan. It will be interesting to see if the bidding war continues.

Manual 1977 280SL with body kit

The sun is out and here is another topless option.

This car has traveled 96,000 and what makes it more desirable than the plethora of other R107 SL models out there is the manual transmission. I can’t get a good look at this from the photos or the info to tell if this is a 4 speed or a 5 speed. The U.S. model cars, of which this one has U.S. headlights, but it is probably a grey market import, were stuck with an autobox. Euro SLs could be had with 4 or 5 speeds. I would guess this one has a 4 speed.

The parts on this car suggest that the body kit was added later in the car’s life. The white faced gauges aren’t seen on AMG cars this early and the trunk badge is a more modern AMG piece. I’m pretty certain the only thing AMG on this car is that badge, which is incorrect for the time period. The body kit looks to me to be a Zender kit, not AMG.

Car is up for $1,000 with the reserve not met. I wouldn’t expect this to bring a heck of a lot, but it looks like a solid daily driver. The seller doesn’t provide enough history or description to make me want to bid, but if things check out this might bring $8,000 on eBay. Probably more with better description or at a private seller.

Low Miles 1984 Scirocco Loaded With Zender Goodies!

1984 Volkswagen Scirocco with Zender Goodies

I haven’t seen a second gen Scirocco this clean since high school, and that was nearly 20 years ago! This car belongs to my buddy Josh from Sports Car Shop in Eugene. In addition to only having 65k miles, this car is immaculate. Josh is a particular guy and keeps his rides spotless. He shopped all over the world to put together the great period correct aftermarket parts and the result is quite stunning.

Check out the listing on VWVortex for this 1984 Scirocco:

Good luck with the sale Josh!

1984 Volkswagen GTi For Sale: Nice and Clean on eBayMotors

With the excitement around the Scirocco’s that have hit the market this week, I’ve got another nice looking survivor to post in this 1984 Volkswagen GTi listed on eBayMotors:

quote from the seller’s eBayMotors ad:

I am the third owner of this vehicle and it has been garaged ever since it left the dealership in 84′. The car was originally purchased here in California and hasn’t left since. No rust on the car. Meticulously serviced with the timing belt and engine mounts changed at 60,000 miles. The car is completely stock except for the BBS wheels with new tires, Bilstein suspension kit , Zender side skirts, Alpine tape deck, new exhaust system and upper & lower strut bars. I will include in this auction the original wheels with still good tires on them and an extra OEM GTI grille. This car is a 9 out of 10 inside and out. The interior is stock in blue cloth with a brand new headliner and all new weather stripping. The pictures should speak for them self. The car just passed smog and is in excellent running condition.

Note he states the car has been garaged it’s whole life and only has 77k miles. I’d have to guess that 90% of the MK1 GTi’s in the world wished they had such a charmed life! The white exterior with black accents and those great looking MK2 GTi BBS rims really make this car look sharp. My only ding would be the nasty blue, American spec interior — But it is clean and tidy.

$6750 sounds a little optimistic, but those rims are probably worth at least $1500. Taking that equity into consideration, I’ll be curious to watch where this car ends up.

1976 Volkswagen GTi Period Modified Car For Sale in Portland

Period correct GTi’s and project cars like this one don’t exist because they’ve been driven hard, beaten, and destroyed over the years. So when one comes up that is persevered, I get pretty excited. This is exactly as I would’ve built the car as a senior in high school in 1992 (if I had funds then of course!) Check out this great looking 1976 Rabbit GTi period modified car for sale:

quote from seller’s Portland Craigslist ad:

76 VW Rabbit,owned/built by 25+ year VW parts manager. Has been in dry storage for over 20 years.Rare Zender body kit,Koni adjustable front and rear struts, poly suspension bushings, callaway large front and rear sway bars,Hurst short shifter, upper and lower stut braces,VDO gauges,44mm dual sidedraft mikunis,1.7L with large valve ported head, euro spec GTI cam, adjustable cam sprocket, high capacity baffeled oil pan, header w/2″ exhaust, large brakes, front vent windows, rare opening rear Kamei side windows,BBS wheels.New tags, tons more $4500

I recently picked up a stack of old VW & Porsche magazines and this car would easily have been a feature within those pages. And good luck finding some of these parts today like the Mikuni carbs and manifold, Callaway bars, and Zender aero kit. As a complete car, $4500 sounds like a great deal to me and of increasing value in coming years. Have you seen what’s happening to GTi prices? I may have to drive up just to take a closer look and re-live my high school years!
