Tuner Tuesday: 1978 Volkswagen Scirocco Sidewinder II Turbo

If the Mk.1 Scirocco is already a rare car to see, finding a period modified one is even more rare – especially when it comes to a well known example, such as the New Dimensions turbocharged example we see here. On top of being a fairly rare car already, this particular example is also one of the even more rare “Sidewinder II” editions that came out in 1978. What did the Sidewinder II get you? Well, according to this letter to dealers from Volkswagen, the Sidewinder got a special air dam, special seats, speedometer backing, decals, and black trim. I love, too, how Volkswagen likened the pose of the rattlesnake to the engine layout in the Scirocco; reaching, considering the 71 horsepower accelerated the “sports” coupe to 60 m.p.h. in a semi-leisurely 11.6 seconds. To fix that, this New Dimensions example has a 1.8 turbocharged motor fitted along with some fairly rare parts:

Tuner Tuesday: 1974 BMW 2002Ti

There are some pretty distinct tuning periods, such that you can generally peg the time frame that a car was modified if it was “cutting edge”. For example, when I saw this 2002Ti pop up on eBay, I immediately thought it was a late 80s/early 90s modification. Most of that, to be fair, came from the dated wheels, but the boxy styling, attempt to update the grill and paint scheme just said to me that M.C. Hammer may have been playing in the background when this car was revised. And like early modified cars and even more recent examples, dated mods sometimes make a bit of a mess – and this car certainly looks dated to me. Despite that I think there’s still a lot to like here; the base is a clean 2002Ti, the box-flares aren’t horrible and inside there are some great Recaros and a Zender wheel. What would you do with the rest?

1981 BMW 528i

$_57 (5)

The Bavaria down the street from me always gets a second look, and the progression to the classic E28 was a smooth one. Bridging the gap was the first generation of Bimmers named 5, and today’s E12 has been putting in some serious work since it was built over 30 years ago. It looks fantastically late-70s/early-80s with gold wheels matching the pinstriping. The grey paint has a few blemishes but overall this car still shows classy and sporty in a way few cars of this era can. Think about what the American car companies were putting out in 1981… and then stop because it’s horrifying. One thing I love about 80s cars is they represent one of the last generations that can be maintained and continue running forever. With the computer invasion, I find it hard to believe that an E60 5er will ever see 300k miles. This 528i, however, has covered those miles gracefully and is ready for someone to help it go another 300k.

Tuner Tuesday Zender Edition: Tuner Accessories Roundup

Zender is one of those names that I really identify with the 1980s. While they continued on after, the real height of Zender’s popularity seemed to be in the 1980s. Body kits, wheels and even steering wheels ultimately resulted in a tuning firm that was able to produce a few of their own show cars; remember the Zender Fact 4 and Vision? Today there are a host of real and copy Zender pieces floating around – here’s a sampling of what I was able to find on Ebay. While the styling may be a bit polarizing, it’s hard to deny that Zender offered customers something unique and having period detail pieces like these can really set your car apart if done properly:

Tuner Tuesday: Tuner Accessories Roundup

Here’s another roundup of some of the cooler accessories I found on EBay this week. The Nardi steering wheel is an absolute classic design and would really dress up a classic Volkswagen. I think the Mercedes-Benz reserve gas tank is too cool, even though it’s technically not a tuner accessory. It makes me want to buy the entire car just so I can slot it in! That DKW racing manifold certainly has a small number of applications, but it’s sure neat to see something for the old classics. Grabbing an original radio might not seem fun, but I love how the Blaupunkt-made Gamma units look for the Audis and you could return your car towards stock. Much as the Metric Mechanics team offers great motors for BMW, Techtonics Tuning offers this well-built 2.1 8V motor pumping out an impressive 150 horsepower with plenty of torque and instant response. Zender accessories are always popular, especially when they’re original items. And one of my favorite wheels has always been the MOMO Monte Carlo – what a stellar looking steering wheel! What’s your favorite?

Motorsport Mondays: A Tale of Two ’02s

Last week, I put a neat 2002 up on our Facebook Fanpage. Sporting crazy Zender flares, an even crazier rear wing, and most crazy a S14 E30 M3 engine transplant, it sure looked the part and generated a lot of interest. Well, the good news! It’s back up on Ebay this week, along with an added M10-swapped Targa Newfoundland Rally veteran that makes an interesting comparison. What’s your flavor?

Tuner Tuesday: Anti-AMGs? Lorinser and Zender R107 SLs

Just yesterday, Paul revisited a lovely green 1986 560 SL and reminded us that these cars are at the bottom of the market in terms of classic Mercedes-Benz convertible ownership. It was only a few years ago that the W113 was priced below $20,000; now getting into a good example of that car will set you back the best part of three times that amount if not more. While in my opinion the W113 was a much prettier car than the R107 successor, there’s no denying the presence and value these 1970s and 1980s drop-top Benzs offer. Yet, few of these cars were modified like the sedan counterparts; those that have are usually AMG cars. But today there are two different versions of the R107 that have been modified, showing the alternatives to Affalterbach crowd:

Tuner Tuesday: Supercharged 1992 Volkswagen Corrado VR6

Last night, I posted a clean Corrado VR6 with some questionable wheels on our Facebook Fanpage. These Corrados, perhaps even more than their GTi cousins, seem to draw out the watercooled tuning crowd and go through many different mutations. Also like their cousins, it’s pretty rare to see them in stock condition, especially good stock condition. Well, today proves that point, so to speak; this Corrado is definitely not stock, but it certainly looks pretty interesting, so I thought it was worth a look. Plus, it’s been supercharged – a different sort of forcing induction than the VR6-swapped Turbo GTis from the other day. Painted fetching BMW Laguna Seca Blue, this Corrado looks ready for the show circuit:

Tuner Tuesday Afternoon Accessories: Volkswagen Corrado Zender bumper covers

Zender. There are few other names in tuning quite as polarizing in the Volkswagen crowd. Though I think they don’t do much to enhance the look of most of the cars they kit out, there are many enthusiasts who love the Zender pieces. For you, this is a rare treat look at a Corrado Zender kit that is brand new – the front and rear bumper covers are in different auctions, so follow the links or the pictures to see each individual auction:

Wednesday Wheels: Wheels for the People from Volkswagen

Although Volkswagen may have come from humble roots and it’s lack of wheel choices through the 1980s showed it, recent generations of the people’s car have had many options to match their climbing price tags. Indeed, whereas Volkswagen had yet to equip a car with 16″ wheels in the year 1999, the more recent offerings have really set Volkswagen apart from the competition with good looks, aggressive style and a markedly upscale feel. I’ll start with the Passat CC 17″ wheels known as “Spa”:

Year: 2010
Model: VW CC “Spa”

I can’t say that I like black wheels or the CC all that much, but 700$ for some brand new OEM wheels including centercaps is a pretty stellar deal. These would certainly dress up any of the Passat or later Golf/Rabbit/Jetta models. Not a fan of black and looking for something a little bigger? How about my favorites, the R32 “Omanyt”:

Year: 2008
Model: VW Omanyt
Diameter: 18″
Width: 7.5″
Bolt Pattern: 5 x 112
Offset: ET 51

Pictures show a complete set of 4 wheels and tires. These wheels are the original Omanyts from the 2008 Golf R32. Only 5,000 made. Very limited and unique wheels. I am selling both the rims and the tires together. The tires are brand new, with about 400 miles on them now. The tires are Falken 612’s 225/40/18. These wheels go for about $454 each. You can find their retail price in the ECS TUNING website under OEM Alloy wheels and check their price to confirm, I’m unable to post link as ebay doesn’t allow it, but you can go check for yourself.

The price of $1150 is for all 4 wheels (including tires).

I love the Omanyts, they just look spectacular. The fluted polished edges are a nice touch you don’t notice until you’re close up. Downside is that they’re heavy – really, really heavy, and they seem to suffer a lot of curb scuffing. This set looks pretty presentable and has tires, a bonus. Rather get into something a little more rare? How about these BBS-made Phaeton “Challenge” wheels:

Year: 2006
Model: VW Challenge

The tires don’t look grand, the wheels have some wear, but at under $1,000 I can’t say I’ve seen a set of these for less money. Like most of the Phaeton wheels they’re pretty highly sought after as a mod for the lower models. The Challenge is one of the better looking wheels on the Phaeton, but would make any Passat look the part too, with an aggressive, chunky look. Need something smaller and a little more classic? How about some new Zender Turbos?

Rare, rare, rare. These are hard wheels to come by. They’re not to everyone’s taste, true, but as a period piece they’d look fantastic on an Audi or B5 Passat. At $1,000, they even seem to be priced quite reasonably considering the market on some older tuner BMW and Porsche wheels – which range in the mid-thousands. I’m trying to get the owner of that Mars Red 20V Quattro to snap them up; I think they’re perfect for that car! Are you a TT, Mk.4 Golf or Jetta driver? There are some great options for you, too – like these New Beetle Turbo “Delta” wheels:

Year: 2002-2005

I always thought these looked pretty darn cool; the reverse 5 spoke is an interesting concept and they made it work. If you squint you can even see hints of the Fuchs wheels from Porsches in this design. Whatever you put it on, you’d certainly set it apart, and the price is pretty compelling. Maybe you have a set of alloys and just need a freshen up? How about some new centercaps?

Volkswagen centercaps seem to use just enough metal to corrode and just enough plastic to fall out when you hit a big bump. They’re cheap to replace, despite what nearly every used Ebay car dealer would make you think (they never put them on!). As a finishing touch, they really can quickly clean up your wheels on a tight budget.

Which are your favorites and what would you like to see?
