V8 Week Preview: 1994 Porsche 928 GTS

Porsche’s foray into the GT car market was supposed to be the move that insured the long term success and viability of the marque. Surely their quirky rear-engined sports car had reached its potential and buyers would prefer the combination of performance and comfort that only a well designed front-engined GT could provide, right? Such was the basic process behind the introduction of the 928. First introduced in 1977, the 928 had a 4.5 liter V8 delivering 219 hp to the rear wheels. By the end of its life-cycle in 1995, engine output had increased to 345 hp from a 5.4 liter V8, but much of the rest of the car, especially its appearance, remained the same. In the end, Porsche had underestimated the long-term viability and potential success of the 911 and it’s now been nearly two decades since the last of these GT cars rolled off the line.

The car we have here today comes from near the very end of the model’s production run: a 1994 Porsche 928 GTS with manual transmission located in Indianapolis.

There’s a ton to like about this car. It appears spotless both inside and out, it has the highly desirable 5 speed manual, the mileage is reasonable, and it comes with a complete service history. It’s fitting that Porsche designated this color as Polar Silver because matched with the blue leather interior there’s definitely a icy quality to the overall appearance of this car. It’s a pretty great combination and a nice departure from the more standard blacks and browns, but without being overly flashy. It’s a GT car, understated excellence is what we want. Bidding has been aggressive so far with nearly 40 bids received and a price currently at $34,100 with the reserve still on. I expect that will come up a little bit, but it’ll be interesting to see if it can meet the reserve. Either way, this looks like an excellent example of the car that Porsche assumed would be its savior.

what a great under appreciated car (928)….back to that word…”service” especially in these cars is a big nut and very important …there is a Zermatt Silver 93 I saw for sale with comparable miles…auto however…ask was 42.9k….so this car should see at least that w/the 5spd.
