2000 BMW 540i Sport

Back in November of 2017, I looked at an early special-order 540i Sport Package. It ticked many of the right boxes; while the later cars gained the shouty M5 exterior bits, the early cars are understated in a nice way, yet still potent. I’ve especially always been a fan of the Style 19 BBS wheels on the early Sport cars, but the follow up wasn’t bad, either. The turbine Style 32s mimicked Alpina’s signature style, but looked right at home and as if they were always intended for the E39.

But this car has some other items going for it that the first didn’t. While both are M62/TU 6-speeds and carried the M-Sport suspension, this one also has the M-Sport steering wheel and sport seats. The downside?

Produced in late February 2000, this Sahara Beige Metallic (443) E39 was mated with N6SN Sand Beige leather – enough tan to make a hearing aid envious. The end of the year saw the upgrades with the face lift, and finding early cars in this kind of condition has become quite difficult. There were fewer early Sports and while they didn’t get the full M5 treatment of the 2003, they’re still desirable in their own right. This one really looks like a great example – at least, outside of the color.

But for someone who wants to fly under the radar, perhaps that’s a great bonus. Not only is this Camry clone stealthy, but I think mostly because of the desert pallet the bidding on this no reserve auction is low – very low. Granted, there’s a few days to go still, but so far the auction has just crested $3,500. The comfort seat special order car I looked at in November first hit $11,000 but then was relisted and I didn’t catch the final amount. While this car’s options make it theoretically more desirable, the presentation on the ’98 was better and the color caught more attention.

This happens to be one of my favorite colors ☺️ I guess at age 62 I must be the target buyer. Timing is everything, and I wish I needed a car now because this would be it.
