Ministerial Transport: 1997 Mercedes-Benz S420 & 1995 Mercedes-Benz S320

As much as world leaders bang on about climate change and conservation, what is it that we typically see in the car park at the G7 Summit? Big black sedans. With security for heads of state of utmost importance, it’s easier to pack in a bunch of armor and defense systems into a car like the Audi A8 of German Chancellor Angela Merkel than it is a Toyota Prius. The consummate state limousine for many nations has always been one car: the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The 1990s saw the chains move for this perennial favorite, growing larger in almost every dimension with a new V12 engine on offer and a myriad of electronically assisted accessories. The following two black W140 sedans represent the lower end of what was on offer in the US market, each with low mileage. We’ll start with this 1997 S420 for sale in Texas.

Note: Just like any used vehicle, few minor nick nacks due to normal wear and tear and road debris.

This is a menacing looking machine with all this black, inside and out. With just enough chrome and machine finish alloy wheels, it reminds me why I prefer Mercedes-Benzes of this period, as they are tastefully adorned rather than slathered with chrome and LED lights all over the place. Restraint is the operative word I’m looking for when it comes to executive saloon styling.

Next up, we’ll take a look at this slightly older 1995 S320 for sale in Missouri. This is a short wheelbase S class with slightly less mileage than the V8 long wheelbase example we just looked at. If you are looking for a cruiser and not an all out barnstormer, the six-cylinder S class could be a good option for you.

If it were my money, I’d put it on the S420. Normally I’d prefer the simplicity and lower running costs of the inline-six in the S320, but for not much more, why not have a V8? In either case, these two cars represent a lot of car for the money. Neither vehicle needs a lot of work, save for maybe a little body work at the rear of the S320. As long as one budgets for the inevitable maintenance and repairs, you too can play Prime Minister for a day.

Ah! The car that Mr. Sacco said he designed a couple inches too tall. They still look splendid regardless. Engine-wise I can’t imagine the 6 cyl is terribly effective in that heavy a car. And if one is interested in any of these, cost can’t be that much of a concern, especially fuel economy. This is not for someone looking for efficiency. Therefore I agree the 420 gets my vote too. Where these cars really make sense is for a comfortable older couple who don’t want monthly payments on a newfangled car, an executive who wants some old school style or an upscale limo service.
