1973 Porsche 911E Targa

Here is my second long-hood Porsche 911 for the week and again we have a 911E Targa, though this time from the final model year in 1973. From there the two cars diverge quite a bit because while the Signal Green Targa was more or less completely original this one has quite a few modifications, though the basic backbone remains fairly similar. The original engine remains, but it has been completely rebuilt and the stroke increased to 2.5 liters. There’s no statement about its current power, but it should be safe to say that it’s producing more than a stock 911E. The suspension sounds like it has been beefed up a bit and the interior has received some general refreshing and lightening including the deletion of the rear seats. The primary change of interest to the exterior is the addition of some SC flares and a set of Cibies up front. Overall the build is typical of the 911 ‘hot-rod’ that we come across now and then. This one is perhaps more understated, but for some that may be just what they are looking for. I think it looks pretty darn good and likely makes for some very nice driving!

1973 Porsche 911 Targa hotrod. This is an original Italian delivery Targa that was imported into Canada in the 1980s, we recently purchased the car from it’s long time air cooled enthusiast owner and imported the car into the US. I personally flew into Toronto and drove back, nearly 1000 miles. The car performed flawlessly and was a joy to drive. A lot of work has been done to this 911 over the years, its not perfect but is a wonderful, matching numbers, driver and shows very well. Some of the highlights include:

EXTERIOR:
SC/RS look with butt welded SC flares. Currently all the bright work has been restored to the original polished aluminium and chrome.
FB front and rear RS bumpers
CF front fenders
Original H4’s plus fender mounted Cibie Repro fog lights.
Last repainted about 15 years ago by PO in its rare and orginal color Swartz Black, paint is not perfect but very presentable for a driver. Expect typical minor imperfections such as stone chips and a few minor paint blisters.
Suspension pan was repaired once and is solid but not perfect work, along with a patch to the rear drivers side floor pan.
All window and targa bar rubber seals replaced 3 years ago
Targa top recovered by PO and does not leak.

INTERIOR:
All gauges work including clock
10,000 RPM tach rebuilt by North Hollywood Speedo
Radio delete
RS door cards and rear seat delete
Lightweight RS carpet kit from Appbiz
Rennline floorboards and Rennline fan cover in front trunk
Momo Prototipo steering wheel
Seats are early ‘70s German Konig sports seats which are very supportive and comfortable.

ENGINE:
Very strong running engine rebuilt on the original case about 30K kms (18K miles) ago by PO and still running original MFI.
It is now a long stroke 2.5L std. crank shaft
Engine case time serted
ARP head studs – align bore honed
3.2L Oil pump
lightened connecting rods end to end balanced
ARP bolts
Biral Cylinders bored to 86mm
J.E. Pistons 9.5 to 1 C.R
Cylinder heads ported and polished
Twin Plug machined
EBS Racing springs with titanium retainers
G.E 60 Camshaft
Throttle Bodies Port matched
Electormotive crank fired ignition system HPX

OIL COOLING:
Front trombone oil cooling system

SUSPENSION:
19mm torsion bars up front
26mm torsion bars at the rear
all new suspension bushings front and rear 3 years ago
weltmeister (I think 19mm) swaybars up front
SC rear swaybars
Front strut tower brace
Updated to Aluminium rear trailing arms
6 x 16” and 7 x 16” Fuchs front and rear
TRANSMISSION:
915 with LSD
Rebuilt 3 years ago with stock gears
Factory type short shift kit (I believe)
It has to be the smoothest shifting 915 I have ever tried.

BRAKES:
Stock brake cylinder
Front SC calipers rebuilt 6 months ago
Rear M calipers

As always with 911s such as this one we tend to get stuck on price. Modified cars of any sort can be wonderful, but typically only make sense if the price is right. And in many cases with the 911 that price is too high. This one seems no exception. While the comparison isn’t perfect the $79,500 asking price here is above the bidding on the Signal Green 911E I featured earlier this week. Bidding there remains at $75,100 so the two prices aren’t far off, but I would suspect the much more original and rare-color example to fetch the higher value of the two. So I suspect this one will remain for sale or for its current owner to continue to enjoy.

I like this one. A lot. I have a 73 T Targa, mostly stock. But it’s a bit understated for my taste – that goes for the performance and the looks. But this one is just right. Perfect stance with the flares and wider wheels. An E-spec motor, beefed up beyond that of the S, and suspension that can handle the additional ponies. I’m sure its a blast to drive.
