1986 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3

Back in “the day” if you knew about what AMG was and the cool things they produced, you could have a little taste. If you purchased a Mercedes-Benz product and took your new car to AMG West in Beverly Hills, California or AMG of Missouri, you had your choice of the catalogue. Truth be told, most of the products were bolt-ons, although there were some power upgrades in terms camshafts and exhaust systems. Today’s car, a 1986 190E 2.3 up for sale in California, is one of those bolt-on cars.

Selling my completely original 1986 Pre merger AMG Mercedes 190E 2.3.

All of the genuine AMG parts were fitted by the Mercedes Dealer when the car was sold new.
Being a 1986 makes this a very early 190E and so the AMG parts are all Generation 1 (GEN 1) which is extremely rare.

The car drives fantastically and has an amazing road presence.

Very rare and collectable pre merger AMG car.

This is very much “all bark and no bite” but power really isn’t the point here. These things are very much 1980s cool and hip, and well past the time of being just a used car. This one has the full body kit, wheels, steering wheel, and giant logo floor mats. But like I mentioned, the 2.3-liter M102 inline-four pumped out just 130 horsepower and 146 lb-ft of torque – not many will feel “Hammer”ed by this.

So how much for all this show? A cool $15,000. Yes, that seems like a lot for a base 190E 2.3, but you are buying the sum of the parts here. If this one is as in the condition the seller says it is, then maybe not such a bad price. You just have to be a giant AMG nerd to justify it.

15k for a car that almost looks like a 200k one isn’t a bad deal in my eyes. 95 percent of people wouldn’t know the difference. Also looks pretty mint.

Edit to comment: a similar 2.3-16 wouldn’t cost that much more for an extra 55hp. Probably would go for that instead of this, but the styling is still nice on this one.

The real deal would be much better however considering this is available at a fraction of what a real one would sell for and considering how one would driver either these days this may be the better value and option.
