1987 Porsche 911 Carrera

It’s time to turn our attention back to the 3.2 Carrera and check in on the market for these excellent cars. The 3.2 Carrera, along with the very similar 911SC, remains one of my favorite variants of the 911 for reasons that defy the logic of performance and even appearance. These were the Carreras of my youth and I still feel a great deal of excitement when I see one on the street. For a time they also represented the best values on the 911 market, but with the general rise in values of the air-cooled 911 it has become increasingly difficult to find one at a good price. Without the seller coming down on the price here, this 1987 Guards Red Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe won’t set anyone’s heart aflutter for its value, but it still represents an excellent looking example of the breed. 1987 was the first year the G50 5-speed transmission was offered on these cars so sellers are always seeking a premium.

We see a fairly large number of Guards Red Carreras in various states of condition and this one certainly presents as one of the better examples overall. With its very reasonable mileage, a large document history, and a host of materials that came with the original car, this certainly appears to check almost all of the boxes. As noted, an original radio will have to be sourced to return the car to its full originality, but all things considered that’s not a significant drawback. Overall, this car is priced a little ahead of the market, but it surely can’t be long before these sorts of prices become the norm.

At these current prices, many of these will just become garage queens unfortunately. No one wants to risk a door ding while making a weekend errand run to the bank/grocery store. That’s too bad – they’re rare to see on the road now, and will become even more scarce. I like to take my 3 year old Son in my 83 SC out to his sports activities and weekend chores, so I don’t worry too much about the dings – just try to park “smart” where I can. . I guess I also plan on keeping it forever too – everything can be fixed at some point.

I think these must be rare on the road these days. My car gets a lot more reaction when I’m running errands or stopping for a quick run somewhere. Maybe these cars are getting put away with the recent price run up. What a shame that would be.

Most definitely the new norm. Especially the G50 coupes. I believe the white ’87 that BaT auctioned off from their own stash went for $45K with around 60K miles and in presentable, but less than perfect condition and with non-original wheels.

964 RS Americas are going for $149K in multiple outlets. Apparently Canepa just sold one for $150K.

Great cars, but the market is too heated for me. One might argue short hood 911’s have been undervalued for too long. As a dedicated URS6 driver, however, I have a tough time wrapping my head around the value per dollar equation. I want to drive my cars after all, and not have to worry constantly about damage or theft…
