While 1990 ushered in a new SL roadster, the S-class sedan and SEC coupe would hang on for another two years before their replacements arrived. Considering all generations of S-class over the last 40 years, the W126/C126 is perhaps one of the most timeless. As with every new generation of Mercedes-Benz, new technologies became available and integrated bumpers eliminated the bad proportions which we saw during the crash bumper era of the 1970s. Toward the end, these cars were still a formidable opponent in the luxury class war, standing up in performance and luxury even against some new competition from Japan. This 560SEC for sale in California looks smart in black over palomino livery and has covered less than 80,000 miles in its lifetime.

We’ve seen a few clean 560SECs sell over the past for years, with most hovering in the $15,000 to $20,000 range. Considering this one has a well documented history with proper servicing, the price is right in line with the current market. As much as I love the R107 SL, every time I see one of these late C126 coupes in mint condition it has me rethinking what my favorite Mercedes might be. Looking at the current lineup of Mercedes with their excess of chrome trim and wild styling, I’ll go the classic route every day.

Dignity and class were shown the door after this generation at an exponential rate. Even within a few years all was gone.
Truly the end of the great Mercedes chassis. If you have the means to buy a w126 chassis car in superb condition you owe it to yourself to do so. It won’t disappoint.
Throw on some AMG Monoblocks and this one would be perfect.
Nuts… Too bad it’s black.
I love the color. Just not on cars for me.
I keep toying around with the idea of a 126 Mercedes (had two, loved them) or a nice 80’s 6/5 series BMW…. This one is tempting, but the color… 🙁 🙁
hydraulic pump reservoir is very, very low. Makes you wonder if the dreaded pump leak has already happened.
Expensive fix, by the way, with no new parts available from the dealership.
