To the uninitiated, the 300E we featured yesterday and this 500E may look almost identical to the eye. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Those who read this site regularly are very aware of this fast W124, a Mercedes-Benz and Porsche mash up that is, to this day, considered one of the best sports sedans to ever roam the earth. This was a car that blended sport and luxury so seamlessly, with subtle fender flares, a luxurious, four-place cabin and a powerful V8 under the hood. Combine that with assembly carried out by Porsche at their Zuffenhausen plant and you have a four-door Porsche of sorts that predates the Panamera by two decades. This 500E for sale in Texas has a good bit of mileage on it, but looks to have been well cared for over its lifetime.

As it is with many high performance machines, service is everything with these 500Es. Hopefully if records are available, they are comprehensive as to give prospective owners a good baseline. Regardless, a pre purchase inspection is always a wise investment. Plenty of these fast E classes have reached the 200k mark, so unlike many exotics, there’s a W124 durability one can count on. The color might not be to everyone’s liking in this case, but if you asked me, beige never looked so good. Prices have been rising a bit on the 500E/E500 over the past few years. If this car is as good as it appears in pictures, the asking price is quite reasonable.

There are actually two additional 500E/E500 (depending on year) on eBay right now, I happened to be checking them out last night. The one featured in the GCFSB is the least expensive, but for sake of comparison here are the other two:

This one has something weird going on with the dashboard by the center vents and passenger airbag… it’s significantly warped / bent. DW-SD had a PPI done on this car a year ago (Dec-2012) and decided to pass on it. Details are on the 500Eboard (search for the VIN).
@GSXR – great info. . .dang, I googled the VIN and saw the last time it was listed for sale (same dealer in Houston), almost exactly one year ago, it had 7 less miles than it does today, a year later. It’s been sitting there for a long time without barely a test drive! Looks like it has some issues but great community research is out there, could be a fit for someone at the right price who knows its flaws??
PS – GCFSB, in the name of helping more knowledge spread easier to more buyers and sellers, it might be a service to the community if you extracted (from original ad) & attached VIN #s to the posts on cars that you mention. The more comments and pertinent info (like GSXR’s in this post) that are on the same page as the VIN, everyone wins.
Overall this one doesn’t look that bad, and the price is reasonable. It will need some TLC though. Very hard to tell from photos what is up with the dash, but it should be fixable with some salvage yard parts. Strange that the odometer hasn’t budged much in the past year.
For any 500E’s, pretty much every one that pops up on the market in the USA is captured on the 500Eboard with as much information as is available. Photos archived, CarFax or AutoCheck posted if available, etc. Sometimes people share PPI results as well.
Definitely search the VIN on Google for any potential car purchase, you never know what may turn up. I found what appeared to be a good deal on Craigslist locally (not a 500E) and Google proved the car was sold at auction a year previously with nearly 100kmi more than the odometer indicated. Be careful out there. 0_o
Thanks everyone for the input as usual!
Paul
That good intel GSXR! The 500eboard is the best car forum. This blog rocks too! Cheers.
