It happens every time. I’m struck by a particular car and, in this case, made a point about how I almost never came across a Guards Red 964 and how much I enjoyed that color on that car. Lo and behold within a couple of days I come across another Guards Red 964. The universe is funny. But I digress, here we have a beautiful Guards Red 1992 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Cabriolet, located in California, with Cashmere leather interior and 45,579 miles on it. The 964 has quickly become an excellent value amongst 911s, not so much because prices for one have fallen, but rather that the market for a 964 hasn’t escalated at quite the same degree as a 3.2 Carrera or even 911SC. At least not yet. So, as we enter the warmer months, what better way to enjoy a weekend of motoring than at the wheel of a fantastic drop-top 911.

Offered for sale is an absolutely stunning, 45k original mile, accident free and mechanically strong 1992 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Cabriolet. Finished in iconic Guards Red over a tasteful and complimentary Cashmere leather interior, the car is as tight and sound as it is beautiful, a rare and fairly low production example that’s always been well cared for and maintained and comes with a clean CARFAX report. Whether you’re in the market as a seasoned Porsche collector or just as a weekend enthusiast, this original, strong and gorgeous 964 Cabriolet deserves your serious consideration.
Delivered new to its first owner in Massachussetts, he would own the car until 1998, at which point it was sold to an attorney in Los Altos, California who would use it as a weekend driver for jaunts to his vacation home on Lake Tahoe. In 2001 he traded the car in on a new 911 at his local Porsche dealership and it was subsequently sold to its third owner, who coincidentally was also a Bay Area resident with a second home on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe. We purchased the car from the third owner, who had only put 10k miles on the car in the last 13 years of ownership.
Although few miles we accrued during the previous owner’s tenure, the car has a number of basic maintenance and service receipts documenting the level of care it was provided. Consequently the car is mechanically excellent, the original, numbers matching 3.6L engine starting immediately, idling consistently and pulling strongly and smoothly through each of the 5-speed transmission’s gears. The compression is excellent across all cylinders, the car drives and brakes straight and true and the suspension and road manners are exceptional. The car is entirely comfortable cruising down the highway or tooling around town, but the legendary Porsche handling also becomes abundantly apparent when pushing the car through the canyons. Everything works as it should, including the power spoiler, power soft top, power seats, power windows and air conditioning, making this a truly turn-key example that needs nothing to be enjoyed but a doting new owner.
The Guards Red finish is striking, in excellent condition throughout and cloaking an original, accident free body. The gaps and panel fits are all factory consistent and correct and the car is marred only by incredibly minor imperfections, none of which are significant enough to appear in any of the pictures and none of which detract from the car’s considerable overall appeal. The glass and rubber is all in excellent condition, as are the original five spoke wheels with colored crest center caps, wrapped in Continental tires with plenty of remaining tread.
The car’s interior is equally as clean, the original Champagne leather seats, carpets and interior panels all showing hardly any wear, commensurate with what one would expect from a well cared for 45k mile car. The car was optioned from the factory with desirable “Raffleder†gathered leather seats (code 980), rear seat delete (replaced with storage compartments and a practical shelf), automatic speed control and premium sound including 2 speakers on the back shelf, an amplifier system and a CD-Player with radio. The original CD Player has been replaced with a high quality Alpine unit (with auxiliary plug in capability), however nothing else on the car is custom or aftermarket. Lastly, the original soft top was replaced last year with a correct German canvas top and is consequently in excellent condition, as is its boot cover.
This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a beautiful, low mileage, mechanically sound example of a desirable and quickly appreciating model that has recently joined its predecessors in the ranks of timeless Porsche classics. This should come as no surprise, considering that between 1989 ½ and 1994 (the 964’s production run), the U.S. economy was dealing with a recession, yielding considerably lower production numbers compared to its 3.2L predecessor and 3.4L successor. Further, the 964 is exceptionally comfortable compared to earlier 911s, yet it still retains that visceral, grin-inducing Porsche ride quality and air-cooled engine tone. Over the last ten years the model reached the bottom of its depreciation curve and is now quickly appreciating, and there will inevitably come a time when enthusiasts’ will wish that they’d acquired a 964 at 2014 prices. This car checks all the right boxes for a serious buyer: low original miles, accident free original body, timeless and desirable color combination, strong original mechanicals and, as a later production example, a 964 that had some of the early production cars’ kinks worked out by Porsche. This car presents particularly well and shows an excellent richness and vibrancy in its paint. The seller has provided a good narrative of its ownership history, which shows a history of care that is easily conveyed by its interior and exterior condition. Unlike the six-figure asking price of the 964 featured over the weekend, bidding here sits at a very reasonable $27,607, though the reserve is unmet. I’d normally figure a car like this one to sell for around $30K, but whether that will be enough to meet the reserve, we will have to see. Still, a really nice 964 Cabriolet that should bring even better value down the road.

Although air cooled 911’s (SC, 3.2, 964, 993) have appreciated/depreciated at different levels in history, it appears that currently, all four models are trading in the same price range.
