After its unceremonious and unexplained exit from the U.S. market with the introduction of the third generation Golf in 1993, the GTI came roaring back in a big way for the 1995 model year. Sure, it was bigger, bulkier and well…roundier, but it came with a bunch more gusto thanks to the addition of the VR6 motor as seen in the Corrado and Passat models. The single-overhead cam, twelve valve head lacked the race-bred feel of the Mk.II 16V, the new motor more than made up for it with the addition of two more cylinders. Good for 172 horsepower and 173 lb.ft of torque, it swept the hot hatch from 0-60 in 7.1 seconds and produced a 15.5 second quarter mile at over 90 mph. But much like the original, the GTI was more than the sum of its numbers, with drivers enjoying the great 6-cylinder soundtrack which accompanied the waves of usable torque.
Of course, like all VWs from the period, it was expensive. Really quite expensive. A base GTI VR6 rolled out the door in 1995 at $18,875, and with a few options it wasn’t difficult to breech $20 grand. Yet that was still only a little more than half the money it would take you to grab a same-year M3, which offered only a bit more motivation and cornering prowess. Catch the pesky BMW driver off-guard, and they’d be unlikely to easily out-drag you. So you could either look at this model as a really expensive Golf or a really cheap BMW. That was what the legendary GTI had always been about, and this was a resounding return to form and continuation of the brilliance that was the GTI 16V, even if they felt (and, looked) completely different:

5-speed manual transmission shifts smoothly and clutch grabs great.

This Gti runs and drives great! i am personally a huge fan of Volkswagen’s as i personally own a few Mk2’s and have owned numerous Gti’s in the past but i will say they are now becoming extremely hard to come by almost as hard as the mk2 gti’s and i am not saying its impossible What i mean is when you do they are in extremely bad shape or abused and with the common cancer. This Gti is a prime example of a hard to find clean vehicle.

This is the second go-around for this car, which appeared to sell a few weeks ago for much less money than the current ‘Buy It Now’. As with all second-hand dealers, that makes me a bit nervous as to what the situation with this car is, but on the other hand it could easily have been a flaky buyer. I love the look of rarely seen Candy White on the GTI, too, as it makes the black trim bits stand out all the more. In my Mk.III ownership, I changed out the beltline trim for the European textured bits to break up the monotony; it was worthwhile visually, and would be so here, too I think. The BBS Pininfarina-design wheels are correct and look great to see though I think the earlier BBS wheels and later Speedline 7-spoke designs are both better visually. Inside is upgraded leather in generally good shape. The car appears primarily stock outside of the aftermarket fog/blinkers in front. There’s some evidence of the 146,000 miles on the odometer; dents below the passenger taillight, a cracked passenger headlight, cheap replacement tires and an ugly pinstripe. But much more important to a prospective buyer are the rust-free doors, fenders and hatch – throughout, this car looks to be in very good condition. No service history is offered, but the seller speculates there may be recent service based upon the look of the wires and sneaks in at the last moment that the heat may not work. Still, for $4,500, overall this example doesn’t look like a bad driver. You can get GTI VR6s cheaper but they’re often beaten within an inch of their life, and proper rust mitigation could easily consume most of the asking price here. Models like this should continue to appreciate if cared for, too, just as the 16V model which preceded it – though a safer bet for collections would be the harder-to-find Driver’s Edition model. This one will likely never be a collector example due to the mileage alone, but for a great looking driver that’s a ton of fun it still offers great bang-for-the-buck.

Great cars. I currently have a 98 VR that I daily and love nearly every second behind the wheel. The exhaust note alone is worth the price of admission. Although, I do have a Magnaflow cat back to thank for that!!! I agree with you Carter on the Speedline wheels.
