I love seeing creative solutions people come up with when factory options aren’t enough. Sometimes they are brilliant, sometimes they are half-baked, and sometimes they are a little bit of both. Today, we have that “little bit of both” recipe on this 2003 Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG. The story was the previous owner didn’t care for leather seats, and since leather was the only way to go on the R230, they did a custom cloth setup. Truth be told it doesn’t look all that bad, except this previous owner wanted one more special request: the largest headrests I’ve ever seen in my life.

Oh boy. I can not imagine driving this car and finding any kind of comfort with those headrests. Aggressive doesn’t even begin to describe them and they surely put a damper on what was a cool change up for the typical leather in this car. Cloth interior aside, this one looks like it was well-loved with some scuffs and nearly 155,000 miles on the odometer. I know this platform is fairly strong, but some due diligence is probably required, even for the attractive price.

That price of $14,500 doesn’t buy you much in 2022, and certainly not a chance at a 493 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque all that often. Is it worth it? It seems hard to say no, even with those Yautja-like headrests. Just make sure you source some replacements first.
