I guess I couldn’t stay away from high-priced Turbos for too long, though at least this time we are staying within the realm of the water-cooled 911, rather than venturing back into the rarefied air of the air-cooled models. Here we have a Speed Yellow 2004 Porsche 911 GT2, located in Oklahoma, with 8,150 miles on it. While the price here certainly dwarfs that of a standard 996TT, buyers are at least getting a healthy does of extra performance, both in the guise of increased power – an additional 62 hp for this 2004 GT2 over the standard Turbo – and also reduced weight with the GT2 coming in around 200 pounds lighter. When first introduced for the 993, the GT2 rekindled the rear-drive turbocharged mayhem that 911 owners had come to expect from these machines. While the standard turbo took a more civilized turn by introducing all-wheel drive, the GT2 went in the other direction increasing power, reducing weight, and delivering all of its power to the rear wheels only. They were initially produced in order to satisfy homologation requirements, but with the GT3 RS now fulfilling that purpose for the 996, the GT2 was left to simply exist as a mix of terror and excitement. They are a rare sight to behold on the roads, but when unleashed in the wild, heads definitely will turn.

Cruise ControlIn the end of the 996 model run, Porsche produced 29 (24 in 2004 and 5 in 2005) 996.2 GT2’s which were more powerful (477hp) than the 2002 and 2003 GT2’s (456hp) for the North American market (US and Canada). These cars were also improved in the braking department and had the Gen 2 PCCB’s (Porsche Carbon Ceramic Brakes). This particular car was the last speed yellow 996.2 GT2 produced for the North American market.

I like yellow cars. Not everyone likes them as they aren’t exactly subtle, but I do. That said, I have yet to wrap my head around the way I’d prefer the interior. I suppose all black, even if that seems a bit boring. What I do know is that I’m not a fan of the yellow contrast we see in this interior. It’s tough to nit-pick a yellow car for being over the top, especially when the car in question is a model like the GT2, but for whatever reason the yellow accents we see here take this over the top. The rest I like and the performance here is undeniable, there’s just something about the interior. I digress. With this GT2 currently showing one bid at $150k we quickly see the price gulf that separates these cars from even the standard 996TT. Yet, we are light years away from the kind of prices we see for the 993 GT2. With only 29 examples built for the 2004 and 2005 model years (the two years with higher horsepower) these are extremely rare and we can expect them to do well on the market in the future. Just how well remains to be seen, but my guess is that these are the cars that collectors begin to gravitate towards next.

996 GT2’s of either bent are absolutely sick to drive, they are a 996TT on major steroids.
rear-wheel drive, lighter & more Hp…make for a coolie-puckering ride….
had the luck to drive an 02 that was ‘warmed-over’ as the owner called it…..
these cars have held their values just because of the limited number and the sheer rawness…they made a 996GT3 look a little anemic.
as for the color…well a little fly/speed yellow wakes you up!…the interior would work for me in straight black, but it is not a deal breaker….I like the GT3 rims on this….however for 150k…I can find myself a low low mileage 996TT(04-05) and ‘warm it over’ to be eveything and then some of a GT2…..performance wise
I like the console in body color… The ‘horseshoe’ and vents, not so much.
