Kompressed: 2002 Audi S6 Avant Supercharged

The C5 Audi S6 was a little soft, you say? Not this one. While enthusiasts may have been disappointed that the C5 Audi S6 was available in tiptronic automatic only in the U.S., it was also only available in Avant form here, something that fans could at least celebrate. Mated to the excellent 4.2 V8, it was a solid choice for fast, comfortable performance for a family. But for some folks that just wasn’t enough, and we thank them for that. From the few that have undergone the manual swap, there are some row-your-own S6s floating around for sale from time to time. While this particular car doesn’t have that option, what it does carry is a PES supercharger pushing a few pounds of boost into that awesome V8. The result is near RS6 levels of performance in a sleeper package:

Motorsport Monday: 190E – DTM or WRC Flavor?

$_57

Homologation for motorsport is nothing new, but it’s uncommon that a vehicle will make the transition into multiple race series. Mercedes-Benz had intentions of rally competition with the 190E when it was introduced in the early 1980s, but, as they say, life is timing. With the Audi Quattro lighting up the World Rally scene, Mercedes became a bit gun shy of the proposition. Instead, they decided to go racing in the newly devised Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft (German Touring Car) race series. The first years of this series were legendary, with Mercedes going head to head with E30 BMW M3s on the track in some epic battles.

The two competition 190Es we’ll take a look at today were intended for two very different race series. The first 190E we’ll take a look at is for sale in Holland and was intended for the rally circuit.

1964 Porsche 356C Sunroof Coupe

I wrote last week about the price of nostalgia and while that post was concerned primarily with the cost of a 911 from the 1980s, we can begin to appreciate our nostalgic yearnings quite a bit more if we rewind further. The 356 takes us back to Porsche’s roots and that very fact imbues these cars with a spirit that no other model could replicate. Vintage cars such as these are, in a way, history lessons; displays of an ideal that, especially in the case of the 356, have lead to years of development and continued success. The specific example featured here is a restored, numbers matching, 1964 Porsche 356C Sunroof Coupe. By modern standards, the lines of the 356 seem almost pudgy, but underneath those curves lies a light and graceful machine.

1988 Mercedes-Benz 560SEC 6.9 Engine Swap Down Under

Here is an oddity for your consideration. The mighty Mercedes 450SEL 6.9 remains quite a car today and the 560SEC represents some of the best of an old school Benz, however put them together and perhaps you are taking away from each. This isn’t the first time someone has decided to combine 6.9 parts with a W126 chassis, Google Sbarro Mercedes for instance, as with their creations results are mixed.

2011 BMW 328i Touring 6-speed manual

$_57

Having your cake and eating it too. Few cars in the automotive spectrum come closer to this than a 3 series Touring with a manual gearbox. While you can buy a brand new 3 series Touring in the United States with either a diesel or petrol engine, you can no longer specify the three pedal option. So, barring a change in BMW sales policy towards US customers, this 2011 328i Touring with a 6-speed manual represents the end of the road for manual transmission estate cars on these shores. Following on to the E30 Touring and A6 Avant we featured earlier today, here’s some more five-door goodness in the form of this 328i Touring on offer in Colorado.
