Volkswagen Variants on a Theme: 2003 Jetta GLS 1.8T v. 2001 Passat GLS 1.8T

Obviously, this post comes to you from someone who likes Volkswagens – and, in particular, 5-door VWs. I’m not sure exactly what the attraction is for me, but the last two Volkswagens I’ve had – both Passat GLS 1.8T Variants – have been faithful and fun-to-drive companions. Despite their relative popularity (VW sold nearly 110,000 wagons in North America – 20% of production overall), they somehow manage to stand apart from the crowd. And for about ten years VW enthusiasts got to choose not only from the Passat’s fairly robust lineup of wagons which featured everything from luxurious automatic V6 all-wheel drivers to thrifty diesels and outrageous W8s, but there was also the slightly smaller Jetta Wagon as well. Like the Passat, several options were available, from a basic 2.0, the turbo 1.8, the TDI and the crazy VR6 model.

Today I’ve got two examples to consider; in this case, both are front-drive 1.8T 5-speed manual GLSs. Despite what should be a very similar basis, these two take on remarkably different character. Pricing is pretty similar but presentation and mileage are quite different. Which is the one to buy? Let’s start with the Jetta:

1982 Porsche 911SC Backdate Outlaw

I’ve featured a decent number of these backdated 911s and they always come in a wide range of quality and design. Mostly they’re good-looking 911s and I think we can understand the desire to produce such a build. They combine the beautiful and highly desirable aesthetics of the early long-hood 911 with a more modern and higher performance drivetrain of a Carrera or later 911. They also tend to be a good bit lighter than the original donor.

The consistent problem with these builds is price. Or, to put it more specifically, price relative to the performance gains. Many of these builds retain the engine and transmission of the donor – usually either a 911SC or 3.2 Carrera. In itself that’s fine; those are good engines and with the reduced weight of the build the performance gains and aesthetic improvements are worthwhile. However, this all might cost a decent bit of money, especially if the donor car itself needs some work, and as a buyer you’re only going to pay so much for what ultimately are aesthetic changes.

The way to solve the price problem is with a better engine. The 964 and 993 are both there waiting, it just isn’t as easy to get a hold of what you need. At that point we’re really getting the performance improvements and the higher price begins to make sense. Singer, of course, has made its name using bespoke 964s and can sell them for half-a-million dollars. That’s not at all what this car is. It has, however, chosen to eschew the usual 911SC engine and moved up the chain: a 1997 3.6 liter from the 993. Now we’re talking!

1991 Mercedes-Benz 300CE

I’ve said this before, but I want to reiterate it once again. The Mercedes-Benz W124 Coupe has quickly become the next classic Mercedes that everyone is searching Craigslist and their neighbors garages for clean examples to snatch up. For the longest time these were just another old Mercedes that was a really good car in its heyday but time soon passed by for newer cars. Well, now that it is very clear that cars like the W124 won’t be made again and the gold rush has started for the pillarless coupe. Some of these really nice cars, especially face lifted E320 Coupes, have been bringing five-figure prices regularly and there doesn’t seem to be a short of willing buyers â€” myself included. Thankfully, there still seems to be a few of these cars out there for sale that represent good value if you want to get in one of these. This example up for sale in Eastern Pennsylvania seems to be just that. Don’t get too excited though, this one is far from a showroom example.

2007 Porsche 911 GT3

There is something invigorating about a well-kept track car. It’s food for the enthusiast’s soul. I’m operating a little bit on assumptions here. The first, of course, being that this Carrara White 2007 Porsche 911 GT3 has been used on the track. It’s likely a safe assumption given the model and a couple of modifications, but if incorrect it wouldn’t be the first GT3 to avoid a track. The second assumption rests entirely on appearances, but again I think it’s well founded as this GT3 looks in very nice shape inside and out. Everything will need to be checked out, that should be obvious, but what we see is promising. The promises of a Porsche used as its engineers intended and capable of continuing to operate in that manner for years to come.

2018 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG

The 2018 model year is the last year for the W463 Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen after a truly impressive 28 year model run that began in 1990. Like any good manufacturer, Mercedes wanted to make sure to move those final year units by making a bunch of special editions to pitch to buyers to take their mind off the upcoming new chassis. What Mercedes did with G-Wagen was made a bunch of special paint schemes and interior combinations thanks to their Designo team. This G63 AMG up for sale in Mississippi is outfitted with the $13,550 ”Mojave Package” which gives the ”Olive Magno” paint. Of course, the expensive options don’t end there.
