1996 Audi Cabriolet

Saying that you like the Audi Cabriolet is like saying you thought Jar Jar Binks was the best-developed character in the Star Wars pre-boot.

Put aside the typical top-down motoring bias and stereotype. There were more reasons to single out the Cabriolet. They were soft. They came to the U.S. in automatic only. They were powered here exclusively by the yawn-a-minute 2.8 V6. Inherently it’s not a bad motor, and it had more punch than the inline-5s did (barely). But inspired it’s not. And to top it all off? Perhaps that could have been remedied if they were available with quattro, right? No, FrontTrak only. That was Audi’s lame attempt to make the basic front-drivers sound like they had some cool system. Nope, this was a one-wheel drive wonder. So that’s lame-on-lame action when you’re considering an Audi.

So this is Rocky V, or The Sum of All Fears, or that horrible ninth season of the X-Files. But I have a guilty pleasure. No, I still haven’t watched “X-hibit C” above because why on Earth would I do that? But I do really like the Audi Cabriolet. I can logically admit its many shortcomings, and yet every time I see one I’m drawn to the shape. To me, it’s just a pretty car, even if I can’t fully describe why it’s a pretty car. Even when the ad is lazy, the pictures are horrible, and the car has obvious needs…I…am…drawn….to…..click……

1995 BMW M3 Coupe

Back in May 2021 I talked about how I came of driving age when the E36 M3 launched – so they always catch my eye.

1995 BMW M3

I’m not sure if it’s enough to look past other generations, but a Dakar Yellow one? Yeah, you’ve got my attention. Throw in the forged wheels and Vaders, and it’s a recipe for success – and this one is also mostly original. Couple that with what’s claimed to be a single owner since new and history in rust-free Nevada, and this one sure looks like a keeper? Issues? Well…it does have the best part of 200,000 miles, and despite that these are no longer the cheap fourth-hand weekend pick-ups that they once were.

2003 BMW 540i Individual

While the wild men and woman over in Stuttgart were cranking out the crazy colors, it looks like the usually serious folks at BMW wanted to have a little fun too. Or rather, it looks like someone paid them to do this. This is a 2003 BMW 540i created by the Individual department with not only one of the crazier exterior colors I’ve seen on an E39, but probably a top three wildest interior setups I’ve seen as well. The story is a corporation reportedly ordered this car and had it armored as well, which makes no sense considering you usually want cars that blend in if you are the kind of people who needs an armored vehicle. Whatever the case may be, I am glad it exists because I live with these wild specs. Wait until you see this interior.

2012 Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Coupe

It’s hard to believe it took Porsche until the facelift generation of the 997 to utilize the GTS moniker on a 911 considering it started way back in 1963 with the 904 Carrera GTS. It had a nice run on the 924, 928, and even the Cayenne of all things before hitting the signature model 911. Strategically, it slotted in perfect between the Carrera S and the hardcore GT3 for the drivers who wanted more but not enough to rattle the fillings out of their teeth. Now, the GTS badge is literally on every model Porsche produces as the value is there for buyers and well, people see it as the true sweet spot of their model range.

Today we have a 2012 up for sale in today in the Bay Area with just under 8,000 miles on the odometer. On the outside you have the classic Basalt Black Metallic, while the interior is covered in Carrera Red leather. This is a special one.

1969 Mercedes-Benz 220D

The Mercedes-Benz W114/115 walked so the W123 could run. Maybe not, but you know what I mean. The chassis marked a way forward into real mass production with almost 2,000,000 units built compared to just 620,000 of the previous W110. You had both automatic and manual transmissions paired with handfuls of engine choices over the nine-year production run and that laid the groundwork for one of the most legendary cars in history, the W123.

Today, these are often overlooked as the W123 is a far more livable car in almost every way, but that doesn’t mean they should be totally written off in terms of owning one. Yes, they are slow and you probably aren’t going to be regularly using one in today’s traffic. Still, these are immensely satisfying in a simple way a 1960s Mercedes-Benz product can offer.
