2005 Audi TT Roadster 3.2 quattro

VAG’s decisions on who would be able to shift their own gears have always been a bit confusing, but the period of the 3.2 VR6 is really where this came to a head for U.S. customers. In 2004, Volkswagen brought their hottest Golf (finally!) to our market, featuring the singing VR6 in 6-speed manual only form with the R32. Great, but Audi offered the same platform in slinkier TT 3.2 quattro form. However, fans of manual shifting were overlooked as Audi opted to bring the top TT here only with DSG. This carried over to the A3 model range, where you could get a 3.2 quattro but only with the DSG box.

Looked at another way, though, the crisp-shifting DSG was the start of a new trend of dual-clutch gearboxes that – until quite recently – were the fast-shifting box of choice. And unlike the R32, the TT 3.2 isn’t super-highly sought, meaning you get the (arguably) better looks, same driving and sound experience, and here…a convertible roof for quite a discount:

Spring Project: 1980 Volkswagen Scirocco S

I’m going to get a bit gushy for a moment, if you’ll allow me. I love the original Scirocco. Considering I’m a huge fan of the similarly Giugiaro-designed Audi Coupe, that should come as no surprise. Both the GT and the Scirocco have some odd angles, and there is no argument here that they aren’t the prettiest designs ever to be penned by the Italians. However, it’s that awkwardness that adds to their appeal for me – they stand out not because they’re perfect, but because simply they stand out and not in a bad way. It’s something that the second-generation Scirocco wasn’t able to pull off, in my mind. The short and squat original model, though it lacked the performance of many of the top-tier Volkswagen products, has to go down as one of the prettiest Volkswagens ever made. While they were a popular coupe and in many ways helped to spawn the sedan-based 2-door market that was the rage in the 1980s and early 1990s, not many of the original Sciroccos remain thanks mostly to rust and electrical issues. To me, the best looking of the original models are the infrequently seen “S” models, such as the 1980 which popped up this week for sale. The S was mostly an appearance package but featured a front spoiler, some cool stripes, a 5-speed manual, and Recaro seats; it was also only available in three colors in 1980 – black, Alpine White, or today’s Mars Red:

2012 Volkswagen Golf R

In 2012 Volkswagen brought the U.S. the spiritual successor to the Golf Limited – the Mk. 6 Golf R. Gone was the VR6, replaced by the more potent and tunable 2.0T that could now be specified with a manual and all-wheel drive, and importantly in 4-door guise. Did I buy one? Nope, because this German wonder rang in at a shocking $36,000 with options. For a Golf, mind you. But once they started hitting the used market, to me they became more appealing. Unlike the R32, they dropped in price. And they still came in great colors, like today’s Rising Blue Metallic.

2020 BMW M2 Edition Designed by FUTURA 2000

“The what?”

Yeah, that was my reaction, too. As a fan of these pages, of course you’ll know that BMW has a long history of pairing with famous artists, but I have to admit that Futura 2000 was not on my radar. That’s Leonard Hilton McGurr, an American graffiti artist, who has dropped the 2000 since…well, maybe because we’re 23 years beyond Y2K. In any event, BMW employed the artist to design three special M2 Competition Coupes for the 2000 show circuit, and 500 special M2s were produced to commemorate that. What did you get? Essentially, these were stock all-black M2 Competitions that had the artist’s flair applied to the lower bodywork and interior trim. As these cars go, these are about as tame as you can get. The price? It’ll have you checking the calendar to see if it’s still April Fool’s Day…

2000 BMW M Coupe

Back in 2020, I took a look at one heck of a rare M Coupe. It’s not that you see them every day by any means, but this particular combination is very rare; just 52 M Coupes were produced in Dakar Yellow, 42 of which had black Nappa leather upholstery, and just 10 of those were ordered without a sunroof. The asking price three years ago was $47,000 – basically, a dollar per a mile on the odometer:

As you can see, it’s back! The ultimate sale price from that first post was $36,000, and then it sold again in 2021 for $44,000. Despite the mileage going up, the price has not gone down:
