Motorsports Monday: 1978 Porsche 928

There’s a strange part of me that loves the idea of turning up to the track in something no one is expecting to see turn fast laps. It’s part of what drove me to continuously develop my Audi GT into a track car, and most of what I love about racers like the Audi V8 quattro and 850 Estate Super Touring. But certainly, when it comes to Porsches everyone expects them to appear on the circuit, right? Well, in the case of the 928, it’s somewhat rare to see them hit the track. Big, heavy and complicated grand tourers, they’re more at home hitting top speed on the Frankfurt-Darmstadt Autobahn then slithering through La Source. Yet some, including Porsche themselves, took the big GT racing – from Le Mans to Daytona, the 928 saw competitive action around the globe even if it never was quite as celebrated as its rear engine brethren. Today it’s just as rare to find a track prepared 928 for sale, but an early example has surfaced on eBay:

Feature Listing: 1987 Porsche 930 Coupe

I still love a Black Porsche 930 Coupe. I will admit it isn’t an exciting color, but a clean black car in good condition still seems to possess something that attracts me even if I can’t quite describe why that is. On the 930, with its bulging aggressive lines and whale tail, I feel that black fits the persona of the car better than almost any other exterior color. I suppose if I really had my druthers, I’d prefer a non-black interior, but that might depend upon the cost difference. That brings us to the car we see here: a Black 1987 Porsche 930 Coupe with Black leather interior and 39,664 miles on it. By 1987 the 930 would be nearing the end of its run and in many ways it had come a long way since the first iterations left the Porsche factory in 1975. There were some weight gains over that time, but Porsche had long ago decided that its Turbo would be a showcase of the civility and refinement possible within a car so capable of exceptional performance. This one still has the 4-speed transmission of its forebears and remains capable of delivering all of the excitement its owners can handle.

1993 Porsche Carrera RS

The beginning of a new year is a great thing for car enthusiasts, as it means another year of tasty vehicles we can get our hands on that were never imported to the United States because of the No Fun Club (aka the Department of Transportation and the Environmental Protection Agency). It will be another two years before this 1993 Porsche Carrera RS will be eligible for important to the US under the 25 year rule, but that date will be here before we know it. In the meantime, I’ll keep ogling at the Mint Green paintwork, my favorite of all 964 hues. The Carrera RS was a European market only 964, a lightweight special deemed a bit too hard edged for the US market. Nevertheless, 45 examples of a model similar to the Carrera RS were imported by Porsche for use in a proposed Porsche Carrera Cup series that never happened due to lack of sponsorship.

These 45 cars were sold without any advertisement, as Porsche was readying another lightweight model for the US market, the 911 RS America. Weighing in at just under 3,000 pounds, these 964s had a bit of weight saving features with just enough niceties included to appeal to the American motorist. However, for those who want the purest of 964 experiences, only a Carrera RS like this one for sale in France will do.

1994 Porsche 928GTS

Those of you who follow me over at Flüssig Magazine may have read my writeup on the ’94 928 GTS 5-speed for sale at Porsche Main Line. In that piece, I got a little sentimental and expressed my enthusiasm for tracking down cars that are, as-yet “undiscovered.” I mentioned that I’ve had a lot of success with tracking down unknown GTS’s thanks to much persistence, due-diligence, and many emails and phone calls. I also mentioned that there are a few cars that I’ve tried to uncover that continue to elude me. This ’94 GTS is one of those cars.

Advertised as a one-owner GTS with 30,000 original miles, the history of this car seems rather banal (in a good way). Purchased new at Princeton Porsche in 1994, the car has been serviced regularly there, and lived its entire life in New Hope, PA. The car is gorgeous, and is outfitted in my favorite color combination of black/tan. Options include the deletion of rubstrips, black carpet (cashmere interiors usually came with cashmere carpets), and a built-in radar detector.

2009 Porsche Cayenne GTS

If you’ve read this website long enough, you’ll know I don’t like SUVs. My reasons for this disdain are numerous, from people who would never use them off-road to the fact that many have aesthetics which would make a prison execution chamber look sleek. If I’m going to be forced at gunpoint to own one, it better be damn well interesting. Enter this 2009 Porsche Cayenne GTS. Sure, on the outside it doesn’t look any much different than your usual heavy beast derived from the Volkswagen Touareg, but what’s that protruding from the center console? A manual gearbox?! Yes, this is one of the very rare Cayenne GTSs to come so equipped in 2009. Apparently just over 30 of these three-pedal off-roaders were sold in 2009, this lower mileage one for sale in New Hampshire being one of them.
