Here at GCFSB we pride ourselves on featuring many of the most interesting German vehicles available on the second-hand market. The particular car we see here, a 1968 Porsche 911L Soft-window Targa Police Car, surely is the most interesting car I will have featured to date. It won’t be the fastest, or even the prettiest, though it’s certainly the rarest (since we cannot get more rare than 1 of 1) and it’s definitely the most peculiar. This Targa Police car was given the full treatment: double rear-view mirrors, a red police light affixed to the Targa’s roll hoop, illuminated STOP signal in place of the rear license plate, along with the electronics to control those lights and the siren. The look was completed with Dutch-inspired Tangerine over White paint and German “Polizei” script along the doors, hood and rear deck lid. It is, quite frankly, one of the most curious 911s we’re likely to come across and that hardly even includes the fact that it is a ’68 911L Soft-window Targa, an already very rare and interesting 911 in itself. It’s fantastic!

There are always going to be cars that will grab my attention more than others and this is one of those cars. The design of the 993 is such that I have always loved the wider bodied versions over the narrow bodies. Make that wider-body a Carrera 2S, rather than the 4S, and I’m going to take notice a little more. From there we venture into more subjective territory. The C2S itself has garnered widespread appreciation for many of the same reasons I am so fond of them: they have the wider Turbo rear, but have retained the traditional 911 rear-drive layout. What strikes me about this one is the aero package. I have always been a whale tail fan on the 911, but the tail on the 993 Turbo never quite sat right with me. The modified version of that tail that came as part of the aero kit for the standard Carrera moves the design back in the direction of the original tea tray of the 930 and I find it to be a much more appealing design. It isn’t the proper whale tail, which for the 993 I only recall being available as one of the options on the Carrera RS, but it still works some great magic on the 993’s body. I’ll admit this feature is more subjective than some others, but overall I am really drawn to this 911: an Arena Red 1997 Porsche 911 Carrera 2S, located in Tennessee, with 77,300 miles on it.

4 CommentsI think most of us are pretty familiar with the 911S at this point and understand the demand there is for these excellent machines. Whenever a marque with a pedigree built on performance and a strong racing history puts out a sport version of their top level sports car, then you know that the bar for greatness will be set quite high. As the years have passed since the introduction of the 911S their popularity has continued to rise and the values of the early long-hood models have soared. The bad news of that is that they are now priced beyond what most anyone other than a serious collector can reasonably afford, but such is the case with nearly all vintage automobiles with any pedigree and a serious character. We still enjoy coming across them and at least having the time to take in and linger over restored examples and other well cared for models that can inspire our dreams. Here we have one in a combination I rarely can recall coming across: a Grand Prix White 1973 Porsche 911S Targa, located in Virginia, with a contrasting Houndstooth and Tan leather interior and a reported 80,382 miles on it.

2 CommentsThe RUF BTR Cabriolet we featured back in December 2013 has come up for sale again, this time with a much higher price! The original auction, which did not sell, had an asking price of $199,500. The car then was relisted at $149,500 and still failed to sell. The current listing has it at $285,000, which is a lot. These are amazing machines with a fantastic pedigree and they have tended to do well on the market, a point which should continue to hold true in the future. But this is asking too much, especially given the previous auctions.

1 CommentThe Porsche 968 continues to capture the imagination of sports car enthusiasts to this day, especially for those who seek the best in handling dynamics. This car was almost a ready-made track car with an almost perfect weight distribution and a large displacement, torquey four-cylinder engine. What was supposed to be a “944 S3” turned out to be different enough than the original formula for Porsche to change the nomenclature. Nevertheless, this final 944 iteration was, like many final production cars, a perfection of the breed. This 968 for sale in Michigan isn’t a low-mileage garage queen, but with a few issues sorted, would make a great driver going forward.
