1987 Volkswagen GTI

It’s been a while since I’ve found a GTI that sticks out, but in a nice green on gold BBS wheels and an old-school BBS bodykit, this one will definitely turn a few heads. It seems like its been around a bit (Autocheck shows 9 owners), but the GTI is probably the best “project car” to continue working on without fear of something that you can’t find/fix/replace. Similar to the exterior, the interior has sweet Recaros and some other add-ons that are fine but not great. Overall it’s a pretty good GTI with many desirable upgrades inside and out. A little simplification would help it become a sweeter ride.

1988 Volkswagen Jetta GLi VR6 Syncro

Dan’s recent acquisition and post about the new GCFSB Project GLi got me thinking about GLis again. Truth be told, I’m firmly in “Camp Golf”, but I had a few friends with nice GLis growing up and they were always great looking and fun. One in particular was a very clean black 91 model, correct with the original BBS wheels. One day my friend came to me and asked if I wanted to buy it; I did, but it was pretty far outside of my price range at that point, so I watched it disappear to some distant land and new owner. That seems to be the story with many GLis and German car fans; everyone seems to know someone who had one at some point and now misses it. I have a feeling that today’s owner is someone who will miss this particular GLi very much, as likely will be all of his friends – who probably like me want it very much but can’t swing buying it right now. But unlike my friend’s clean 1991 2.0 GLi, today’s example shares very little in common with most GLis at all. A bunch of runs to the Volkswagen parts bag have yielded a pretty unique GLi – a VR6-swapped, Syncro-swapped sleeper. Yes, please!

1994 Porsche 968 Cabriolet

With the Porsche Boxster now having been around for almost two decades, there are plenty of good, affordable examples out there such as our Feature Listing example from last week. But, if you want to go the road less traveled with affordable, open-air Porsche motoring, there is this car, the 968 Cabriolet. A slightly forgotten member of the Porsche lineup, these two seater sports cars were the final evolution of the 924/944 formula and featured such up to date equipment as a 6-speed manual gearbox and variable valve timing on their big 3.0 liter four cylinder engine. This red 6-speed for sale outside of Philadelphia has its services up to date and is ready for a new owner. It’s never too early to get ready for summer motoring!

2003 BMW 540i M-Sport

The E39 M5 gets all the press as the best E39, and often as the best M5 ever. Sitting in its shadows is the highly capable 540i. The M-sport came with 6 speeds, M Suspension, and the desirable Style 37 M-Parallels. Today’s has been further upgraded with an M5’s LSD and Dinan chip, helping to up performance levels a little more. Ideally this would be a less-expensive alternative to the king of all supersedans, but the price is dangerously close to decent E39 M5 money. Can the low mileage and choice add-ons make up for missing 100 horsepower and ///M cachet?

1967 Porsche 912 Karmann Coupe

As prices for well maintained and/or restored long-hood 911s continue to soar, my thoughts always drift back to the 912. The same style and the same driving dynamics, but turned down a notch, all for quite a bit less money in today’s market. And that is the basic story of the 912’s life: an entry-level Porsche for those hoping to get a taste of the marque, but without making huge sacrifices in quality nor performance. As with any car that’s approaching 50 years of age, the numbers of quality examples dwindle with each passing year and the cost of entry goes up. For now, however, the 912 still comes at a quite reasonable cost. The car featured here is a restored 1967 Porsche 912 Karmann Coupe located in California. It no longer wears its original color of Irish Green, but still looks excellent here in Polo Red over a Tan interior.
