Tuner Tuesday Double Take – Boosted Gems: 1995.5 Audi S6 Avants

Though they may not generate the gasps and pleasure groans of the RS models Craig and Andrew wrote up last week among enthusiasts outside of the brand, classic Audi fans in the U.S. still regard the original S4 and S6 one of the best models produced by the company. Indeed the S6 Avant has gained notoriety as a “Holy Grail” for fans of the marque here, as it offered the ultimate development of the C4 chassis and inline-5 coupled to analogue all-wheel drive offered in this market. Only a few hundred of these wagons made it here, increasing the mystique and desirability of the package. Both of today’s examples are presented in the defacto signature color of the C4, Emerald Green Mica (Smaragdgruen Pearl) with Ecru leather and both have been turned up a notch from stock. The first example has all the wizz-bang completed, while the second has been maintained and is ready for further upgrades. Which is the one you’d like?

1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe Silver Anniversary Edition

Like many of Porsche’s special additions the Silver Anniversary Edition Carrera, released to celebrate 25 years of 911 production, featured a host of cosmetic changes intended to set it apart from other Carreras of its day, but there wasn’t really anything in the performance realm to complement those aesthetic changes. As such, values for the special editions have tended to be higher than for standard models, but not significantly higher. I’m curious whether that will remain the case as the 911 market slows down. With only the best examples commanding premiums will the special editions remain in that category? The one here should tell us something as it appears in fantastic condition. Here we have a Silver Metallic 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe Silver Anniversary Edition, located in New Jersey, with 50,942 miles on it. This one comes in the lighter of the two available colors – the other being Satin Black Metallic – to contrast with the Silk Grey interior.

Mystic Fiver: 2006 BMW 530xi Touring

Well, it’s been a few weeks so I suppose that it’s time to introduce the newest addition to the GCFSB fleet. My wife and I spent months searching for a potential replacement to her Subaru Outback. She had bought the Subbie new in 2006, and under warranty it had been a great car. However, once out of warranty it had been problematic; unable to go much more than 10,000 miles without eating a wheel bearing, dumping oil all over the exhaust or any other number of various maladies. The “big one” was the timing belt service at 103,500 miles; already pricey on Subarus, it became obvious as we got close that the 2.5 liter boxer was suffering from the notorious head gasket failure. A $800 job soon became a $2,800 job. As my wife pointed out, those are the types of repairs you’d expect on a nicer German car, but not ones you’d associate with the stars of Pleiades. How Subaru has managed to maintain a reputation for quality is beyond me, and with prices of new Outbacks well into the $30,000 range, suddenly the gap to some of the German cars wasn’t so outrageous.

1984 Isdera Imperator 108i

ISDERA, short for Ingenieurbüro für Styling, DEsign und Racing, is a small Germany company that you may have never heard of. They are producers of some low volume sports cars, usually packing Mercedes-Benz power. The Imperator 108i was a sports car that was inspired by the Mercedes-Benz CW311 concept car of 1978 and was in production from 1984 through 1993 with a grand total of 30 units produced. This particular 180i for sale in the United Kingdom was owned by Formula 1 driver Mike Thackwell and could best be classified as a museum piece, with only 3,000 miles on the clock.
