1971 BMW 2800

When considering the large BMWs that preceded the 7-series, most in the U.S. will only remember the Bavaria like the 1974 example Paul wrote up the other day. But before the name Bavaria tipped its hat on these shores, BMW was importing both 2500 and 2800 sedans of the New Six platform. The E3 isn’t usually a fan favorite but it really did pave the way for models like the later 5 and 7-series cars; luxurious, sporting sedans. Largely forgotten and with most rusted to oblivion, today we have a neat 2800 that really ups the sport quotient of the E3:

1996 BMW 840Ci

I’ve always been one that enjoys the road less traveled when it comes to cars. Having inhabited fairly wealthy, urban areas my entire life, I’ve grown tired of the ubiquitous luxury vehicles that seem to multiply on their own, such as the Mercedes-Benz C-class and the BMW 3 series, with the occasional small Audi mixed into the lot. For those who want a bit more speed, you can up the ante up to an AMG, M or S car, but even still, I’m left wanting for more. Something a bit more exclusive. Something, then, like this 840Ci for sale in California. You really don’t see too many of these E31s wandering about these days, especially late model versions like this V8 engined 1996 example. While the 850CSi is the E31 to have, I’d be perfectly happy with the adequate power and lower running costs of this M62 engined variant. Like their contemporary, the Porsche 928GTS, these are super coupes that are beginning to get their due respect amongst the collector market.

1997 Porsche 911 Targa

I don’t feature Porsche’s 993 Targa all that frequently. In part, there simply aren’t a lot of them in total given that we are talking about a single model. But it’s more than that. I’ve always enjoyed the original Targa design and while there are merits to the redesign we saw on the 993 overall I’m less of a fan of them. The most obvious point in the 993 Targa’s favor is that the basic profile of the 911 is less altered relative to what we find with earlier Targas. Viewed from the side, many may not even realize there is any distinguishing characteristic. For some, that point alone is enough to bring them into the 993’s camp. For me, there was always an allure to that brushed roll-hoop and the contrast it created with the rest of the car. Let’s not let these things detract from this particular 911 though because it looks to be an exceptional example in a pretty and rare color. Here we have a Pastel Yellow 1997 Porsche 911 Targa with Black interior and around 33,000 miles on it.

1987 Audi 4000CS quattro – REVISIT

The shining Tornado Red 1987 4000CS quattro I took a look at back in early February has appeared on eBay this week. The seller has not changed the price – $4,750 – from the earlier advertisement, but has added some more information including maintenance and modifications. Unfortunately, those disclosures also include that the car was totaled at one point. Previously the owner had stated it was simply repainted – not unusual for the single-stage red from Volkswagen/Audi if it was not maintained. While this car looks pretty nice, do you think the branded title hurts the value or does it simply not matter on this old warhorse?

1974 Porsche 911 Coupe

A few weeks back I featured a really nice Pastel Blue 1970 Porsche 911T Targa that I called one of the most beautiful Targas I had come across. Here we have a very similar color combination, but from a slightly later period. Even though this Mexico Blue 1974 Porsche 911 was only built a few years after the aforementioned Targa its look is fundamentally different and I struggle to call it beautiful in the same way the Targa was. Such is the nature of the shift to impact bumpers in 1974. This 911 remains, however, quite captivating and while it isn’t in the pristine shape of that 911T the condition appears quite good and given its likely much lower selling price it could make for a fun and eye-catching driver to be enjoyed without any worries over its long-term value.
