1993 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6

This one will take some sussing out. Let’s start with what seems definite: here we have a Slate Grey Metallic 1993 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6 with just under 40K kilometers on it (~25K miles). It has a couple of nice options from Porsche Exclusive including a two-tone black and grey interior with sport seats and rootwood accents. While the rootwood doesn’t necessarily fit the performance character of the Turbo 3.6, this is one of the few instances where I do think it provides a nice contrast and looks pretty good. They didn’t overdo it and that is most definitely to this 911’s benefit. All around this is a gorgeous looking example and the more I come across it the more I enjoy Slate Grey (whether metallic or not) on the 964. Now for the big question: the seller, which is a pretty well regarded classic car dealer in England, has listed it as one of the very few examples of the Turbo S that Porsche produced. But is it?

1996 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa

With the 993, Porsche took a decidedly different path when it came to the Targa model. Gone was the famous roll hoop and targa panel over the front seats in favor of a large glass roof that slid open and concealed itself behind the rear window. The traditional Targa profile reappeared with the current generation 991, with a complex mechanism to handle the removable top. Ever one to favor simplicity, I could only imagine what such a mechanism would cost should it fail years down the road. The 993 Targa had what some would consider a large sunroof which retracted behind the rear window. Some complained of decreased rear visibility due to the glass panel’s tint, but others reveled in the open air enjoyment provided while keeping much of the Carrera’s signature roofline in tact. This 911 Carrera Targa for sale in New York is a one-owner example owned by a member of the Porsche Club of America, showing less than 40,000 miles on the odometer.

Feature Listing: 1980 Volkswagen Dasher Diesel Wagon

Long before “Dieselgate” and the unceremonious admission of Volkswagen about cheating on emissions testing, Volkswagen struggled with the image of diesel. The problem wasn’t as much air pollution – there was plenty of that – but it was that diesels were noisy and slow. How slow? Well, consider today’s 1980 Dasher Diesel Wagon, whose 1.5 inline-4 mill produced a twig-snapping 48 horsepower. Despite the relative light weight at only 2,500 lbs, the Dasher Diesel literally and figuratively lacked spark as it’s near 20-second 0-60 time proved. As gas prices fell and fuel injected gasoline engines became ever more efficient (and powerful), the gap between the fuel mileage to the diesels narrowed as the perceived benefit gulf of purchasing petrol widened. However, nearly 30 years before the introduction of the “Sport Wagon” TDi, you can still see the spiritual basis for Volkswagen’s popular 5-door diesel configuration.

The other day, a gentleman pulled up to me right after I parked my Passat. He rolled down the window and asked if I liked the car, then mentioned that it was lovely. I thanked him and said that I loved the car. Sure, even over a decade on B5.5 generation Passat Variants are a dime a dozen around the streets of New England. But while the B5.5 was by far the most popular choice for German wagons in the early 2000s, it wouldn’t be possible without the B1. Styled by Giugiaro, the new chassis completely redefined the platform for Volkswagen. It was followed by the niche but popular B2 (Quantum in the U.S.), then the odd-yet-cool B3, the more traditional B4 and finally the popular B5/5.5 chassis. With some sadness, the B6 would be the last wagon form of the Passat for U.S. customers, but it went out with a bang – being offered in 3.6 VR6 with 4Motion all-wheel drive. It was about as far from the original B1 as you could get, but the mission of each was the same and they were representative of their times. “We think you’ll agree Dasher is setting new standards for roomy wagons, with elegant appointments and fittings” touted the 1980 brochure, and it’s hard to argue that for some time the Passat was the best value not only in German wagons, but perhaps in family vehicles in total. While they were loved by their respective owner pools, they were also used, and each subsequent generation is steadily becoming more infrequent to see. B5s have already started to disappear while B4s rust away. B3s are downright rare, but not nearly as much as clean B2s. But a clean B1? I’d bet you could count the number of examples in this condition remaining on one hand:

1994 Porsche 911 Speedster

In the pantheon of very striking cars this Ferrari Yellow 1994 Porsche 911 Speedster has to rank pretty high. It doesn’t have the wild looks of the Italian counterparts from which it got its color, but it is nonetheless an eye-catching machine that I doubt would go unnoticed for long on any street. Furthermore, we really don’t see many Speedsters in these sorts of colors. They tend to be much more subdued. Some may look at this Speedster and think there is good reason for those typically subdued hues, but if you’re going to go for a rare car, then why not go all the way? As a potential part of any collection this Speedster should garner a good bit of attention.

1990 Mercedes-Benz 560SEC

While 1990 ushered in a new SL roadster, the S-class sedan and SEC coupe would hang on for another two years before their replacements arrived. Considering all generations of S-class over the last 40 years, the W126/C126 is perhaps one of the most timeless. As with every new generation of Mercedes-Benz, new technologies became available and integrated bumpers eliminated the bad proportions which we saw during the crash bumper era of the 1970s. Toward the end, these cars were still a formidable opponent in the luxury class war, standing up in performance and luxury even against some new competition from Japan. This 560SEC for sale in California looks smart in black over palomino livery and has covered less than 80,000 miles in its lifetime.
