The W116 S-class is one of those Mercedes-Benzes that seems to have been a bit forgotten, sandwiched between two great generations of luxury sedans. This is the case with many cars from the 1970s, but consider just how advanced this car was for its time. This would be the first Mercedes to feature four-wheel anti-lock brakes, in addition to the usual safety accouterments that consumers had become used to from this manufacturer. The W126 S-class that debuted at the dawn of the 1980s would carry the executive car torch even further than before, but that isn’t to say the W116 isn’t without its merits. We’ll take a look at this late production 280SE for sale in Portugal, in very nice original condition fitted with the injected 2.8 liter M110 inline-6.

1991 Porsche 911 Turbo

I’ll cut to the chase a little with this one: my interest in this 1991 Porsche 911 Turbo is partly as a data point. I’m curious where the early 964 Turbos are being valued, especially for those with low mileage and in good condition. With the 930, especially from its final model year in 1989, becoming increasing valuable and 993 prices flying through the roof, the 964 may be sitting in a nice middle position where values have yet to take off, while still offering a tremendous amount of enjoyment. For those who prefer it, you could probably find one of the earlier 930s, i.e. from ’86 or ’87, and come in for less money than a 964, but that’s a less direct comparison than the much more expensive ’89 models, which featured a 5-speed manual as we find on the 964. The 964 Turbos also represent the last of the rear-drive versions and for that I think they will always garner a particular level of appeal. The standard 3.3 liter Turbo may never approach the heights of the 993TT, but there should always be significant demand.

To call the TireRack sponsored “One Lap of America” anything other than a grueling competition would be a disservice to the event. On par with some of the greatest endurance races in the world, the 7-day, 3,200 mile trek around the United States has an added twist – you have to drive your race car between stages. Now, that’s something that occurs in the World Rally Championship – but they cover far fewer miles and have pro teams, pit crews and major automotive manufacturers backing them up. To say that the One Lap is a amateur-only event would also be misleading, but it is far from a strictly professional series – and where else would you see a Honda Odyssey win at anything? Combining several different classes of cars, you get the spectrum from classic performance muscle cars through modern super GTs. The winner of class “SSGT2 SB” in 2014 was a Volkswagen GTi – one of a trio of cars prepared to dominate the event. When you consider that the cars that ranked above them were super GT royalty – Corvette ZR-1s, Viper SRT-10s, Boss 302s and a plethora of Nissan GT-Rs – the level of performance from the GTis is drawn into perspective. Now the builders are moving on, leaving these seriously potent track weapons available at a fraction of their build cost:

1993 Porsche 928GTS Sunroof Delete

It’s been a little while since my last post, but here’s a car that’s interesting enough to wake me up from my one-month hiatus. It’s a RoW spec 1993 Porsche 928 GTS for sale in Germany. There’s a combination of features that differentiate this particular GTS from the rest on the market.

Firstly, this is one of the extremely rare (I am quite sure that unicorns are more common) GTSs ordered with the sunroof delete option. I’ve only ever seen one other sunroof delete GTS. Additionally, the interior is an extremely unique marble grey color with contrasting piping and the $5,000 wood trim option. Those of you who have read my previous articles know that I’m a huge fan of wood in a Porsche. It seems to be pretty common in 993s, but few 928s were fitted with it. I find this a bit weird, as wood is way more characteristic for the interior of a 928 than a 911.

1992 Mercedes-Benz 500E

We tend to take power for granted in this day and age, with your average mid-sized luxury sedans capable of nearing 300 horsepower with not much effort. This was not the case in the early 1990s, when Mercedes-Benz arrived on the scene with their pumped up E-class, the 500E. This Porsche collaboration was dubbed a wolf in sheep’s clothing at the time, with little exterior clues to hint at the 322 horsepower V8 hiding beneath. When your run of the mill 300E had well under 200 horsepower, this was quite impressive. This 1992 500E we see here is a Canadian spec example, looking pretty good considering its age and mileage.
