This crazy, custom Rabbit Pickup popped up a little while back but the auction ended before I was able to get it up here. As the seller states at the end of the ad, clearly this truck was NOT built for speed or performance, but to be a wild-looking showpiece. Stretched and slammed with countless custom touches, there is some outstanding craftsmanship, though the interior leaves a bit to be desired. While I love the grey-green exterior that puts a slight mellow on the exterior aesthetics, I think he was going for a similar look inside that ended up just looking kind of faded and old. I love that ragtop though. Overall this is just a weird personal challenge completed that will turn heads wherever it goes, even if it goes rather slowly due to an awful turning radius and meager diesel power.

Double Take: Audi A6 3.0T quattro Avant

Last week I wrote up a 2007 A6 3.2 quattro Avant S-Line, the end of a dying breed of luxury wagons from German manufacturers. But before they fully dismissed the large wagon from U.S. shores, Audi went out with a bang when it refreshed the A6 in 2009. Minor updates to styling once again brought the A6 in line with the new design language from Audi, but the real change was under the skin. As they had with the previous models, in an attempt to save some weight from the large Audis the company utilized aluminum throughout; the 3.0Ts featured aluminum hood and fenders like the previous generation S6 had. Additionally, just like the 3.2 had been, the new 3.0T was an aluminum block; the decrease in displacement was more than made up for with a literal boost from the supercharger. With a full 20% power increase to 300 horsepower and 310 lb.ft of torque at a low 2,500 rpm, the new 3.0T was a much better performer than the 3.2 FSi V6 had been and was, briefly, a defacto S-Avant that was missing from the lineup. On top of that, the new supercharged layout meant power increases are much easier to attain; as Chris Harris demonstrated with his stunning S4 v. RS4 comparison. Audi also moved away from its “S-Line” designations towards the new strata of Premium, Premium Plus ($1,400), and Prestige ($3,200) levels which added levels of electronic wizardry and small detail difference. That was on top of the raised base price, now $60,200 in 2010. If you though the 3.2 was rare, the 3.0T is downright hard to find even though they’re nearly new.

1992 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.6

This 1992 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.6 isn’t an enthusaist dream machine, it’s basic transportation, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. The listing caught my eye because this car is a one owner vehicle that’s up for sale only because the elderly owner has had her driving privileges taken away. In terms of ideal purchasing situations, that is right up there with the best. Not only do you have a vehicle that has been driven hard, but you also have the added bargaining power of knowing that they need to sell the thing. This example is up in an affluent area just east of Beverly Hills, so I don’t think it’s a stretch to assume that the car has been routinely serviced. There is no mention of service records, but I’m hoping that there’s a big ‘ol manilla folder full of them in the glovebox. If not, I’m sure it wouldn’t be too hard to track down the shop that serviced the vehicle and get all the details on what it may, or may not need in the near future. My guess would be, not very much.

1994 Porsche 968

Porsche’s front-engined sports coupes always have remained somewhat on the sideline and received short shrift from many enthusiasts. Some of that surely is due to their disappearance from the market two decades ago and the continued presence and success of the 911 of course does nothing to help in this regard either. On the second-hand market the 928 commands decent respect, especially a manual-transmission GTS, but Porsche’s 4-cylinder models haven’t yet been shown as much love. On the one hand, that’s a shame since examples like this 1994 Porsche 968 for sale in New Orleans feature some of the best dynamic handling traits in the Porsche stable. These cars were blessed with impeccable balance and as the culmination of the 4-cylinder line the 968 offers the best of what Porsche made available in this design. On the other hand, the market’s relative lack of care for these means that prices remain much lower than those of a similar vintage 911 and enable Porsche enthusiasts who do find great joy from these machines to get into good examples for reasonable cost.
