Double Take: Audi A6 3.0T quattro Avant

Last week I wrote up a 2007 A6 3.2 quattro Avant S-Line, the end of a dying breed of luxury wagons from German manufacturers. But before they fully dismissed the large wagon from U.S. shores, Audi went out with a bang when it refreshed the A6 in 2009. Minor updates to styling once again brought the A6 in line with the new design language from Audi, but the real change was under the skin. As they had with the previous models, in an attempt to save some weight from the large Audis the company utilized aluminum throughout; the 3.0Ts featured aluminum hood and fenders like the previous generation S6 had. Additionally, just like the 3.2 had been, the new 3.0T was an aluminum block; the decrease in displacement was more than made up for with a literal boost from the supercharger. With a full 20% power increase to 300 horsepower and 310 lb.ft of torque at a low 2,500 rpm, the new 3.0T was a much better performer than the 3.2 FSi V6 had been and was, briefly, a defacto S-Avant that was missing from the lineup. On top of that, the new supercharged layout meant power increases are much easier to attain; as Chris Harris demonstrated with his stunning S4 v. RS4 comparison. Audi also moved away from its “S-Line” designations towards the new strata of Premium, Premium Plus ($1,400), and Prestige ($3,200) levels which added levels of electronic wizardry and small detail difference. That was on top of the raised base price, now $60,200 in 2010. If you though the 3.2 was rare, the 3.0T is downright hard to find even though they’re nearly new.

A prestige level car, this was about as expensive as these 3.0Ts got. Oyster Grey Metallic isn’t the most adventurous color but it’s pretty, and the lack of adventure outside is made up by the beautiful interior which features the Amaretto and Black leather interior. It’s a very pretty combination that sets this car apart from the crowd just a bit. Condition, outside of a few scratches, appears to be very good and in keeping with the slightly higher mileage. But at $25,000, this is around the same price as an entry level Golf Sportwagon – making this one pretty incredible performance and luxury deal with all-wheel drive.

This incredibly hard to find 2009 Audi A6 Avant just arrived and is a stunner. They didn’t make many of these quattro AWD wagons so when we see a good one we grab it! Loaded with Premium Plus Pkg, GPS Navigation, Bluetooth, Back-up Camera, heated leather seats, rear DVD entertainment, Bose premium sound, keyless start and the list goes on. Clean 2 owner Carfax with all service done at Audi dealership in Mission Viejo, CA.

This Ibis White example is in equally good condition; a few years older but with less miles, it’s a mid-range Premium Plus example. I particularly like the warm combination of the Cardamom Beige with Birch trim. All things being equal, I think I prefer this example slightly over the Oyster example – Ibis is a beautiful white and the interior looks like a beautiful Scandinavian resort. It’s a few more dollars, but in the grand scheme still quite a deal compared to the other wagons that are currently on the market, and stepping inside you see Audi’s magic at full force in the gorgeous interiors. Even outside, they retain some of the classic styling that made these Avants popular without the gimmicks of more modern designs. They were the end of an era in the U.S., and one that I for one will miss.

Which would you prefer?

LOL at the first dealer who brags about his test drives are “free”.

Funny, I’ve been sort of looking for one of these…thanks! I think if I did either of these it’d be the gray one, not a fan of the lighter interiors (kids). That being said, both I think are a little ambitiously priced based on mileage. But I fully realize they are very hard to find.

So Carter, let me turn it around a bit, what would you pick assuming the budget was not really an issue – One of these two or a 2014 Audi Allroad Premium Plus in Dakota Gray (kind of a taupe-brown that I love) with black Sport Interior? 15000 miles, $37k. I’m about to pull the trigger but hesitating for some reason I can’t put my finger on. Previously also considering RS6, S6/S8 V10 but realized that the 3.0T in the A6 Avant can be made to outperform the V10’s fairly easily and realistic that the Allroad is still under a large amount of warranty (but at a cost obviously). It’s also the smallest which kind of matters but isn’t a dealbreaker. Previous Audi’s were 4000, CGT, CQ, C4 S4, C4 S6A. And currently also a 996 C2 and a GL450 in the garage, both of which will stay.

I’m sad that Audi no longer offers Avants in the US, other than the allroad. This was the best and last version. Unfortunately, that first one is already delisted, must have sold.

I’d go for the second, even though I like the interior on the first as well or better than that of the second. Too bad it doesn’t have a third row seat – what was the last Audi wagon to come with a third row?

Sorry for the delayed response, I’m on the road. Money no (less of an) object, I’d still choose to select one of these over a newer Allroad. I’m not a fan of the newer Allroad styling and the power train is pretty pedestrian in comparison, plus the interior is nicer on the 6 in my view. The advantage of the Allroad is the CPO warranty which admittedly is a draw. Perhaps find a 3.0T through Carmax and get all the warranties?
