1964 Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman

The Mercedes-Benz 600, or Grosser Mercedes as it is sometimes called, is one of those vehicles where I find myself reaching for words to describe it. This awesome car set the bar extremely high not only for luxury vehicles but for automotive technology itself when it was introduced in 1963. Available as a short wheelbase sedan, a long wheelbase limo with four or six doors, such as the Pullman you see here, or as a special order Landaulet convertible, these imposing rigs debuted the M100 SOHC V8 engine. With Bosch fuel injection, this unit produced 250 horsepower and 370 lb. ft. of torque. Even though this car was in production from 1964 through 1981, only 2,677 600 models were manufactured, and under 500 were the Pullman version. That makes our feature a rare car, one which had an overarching affect on many Mercedes-Benz model generations to come.

1964 Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman. As a Pullman model only 487 were made over an 18 year production. These are very rare and highly collectable. With just over 99,000 original miles this will be a great addition to any collection. Starts right up, very smooth driving and engine. No knocking or engine noises. All options are in excellent working order including the very important ones: air suspension, windows, power rear seats, window divider, A/C system, and power closing truck. This well maintained example has beautiful wood trimmed veneers that are in excellent condition. The interior as you can see is also in very good condition. Paint, body, and chrome over all show beautifully.

Almost $100,000 is about standard fare for a well sorted Pullman these days; vehicles with celebrity ownership tied to them can bring more money at times. 1964 Mercedes-Benz 220SEB Coupe 4-speed manual

Mercedes-Benz coupes have always been the choice for those who want a little bit of flair, but on the restrained side. While appearing similar to their sedan counterparts, each successive generation has seen a the delicate, pillarless roof design evolve gradually. My favorite Mercedes-Benz two door has to be where some consider the modern Mercedes era to begin: the W111. These were magnificent touring coupes with a lot of their assembly being done by hand. Even today, these cars can comfortably cruise the highway and give little up in terms of safety and performance to modern vehicles.

Longtime owner, rare 4 speed manual sunroof example. This is a beautiful rare example of a 220SEB coupe with a four speed transmission and sunroof. There is not a person that walks into the showroom that does not comment on how beautiful this car is. I just had new shocks installed on the car as well as shift bushings,full service tune up with plugs, wires, distributor, brakes and brake master cylinder, the car has a great run and drive, very solid. The chrome is good (back bumper has light damage), the rubber seals are good, the glass is good, leather is good, headliner is good, wood is good, clutch and transmission as well as brakes are good.

For me, this car has it all. The color combination is striking, as the black roof contrasts with the white body and black hubcaps in classic fashion. The European market headlamps, sunroof and manual transmission are always welcome features. There’s no telling whether this car was restored at one point, but I’d wager to guess it could be original, with some freshening up here and there throughout its history. Either way, it looks well cared for with some normal wear you would expect. If that’s the case, $22,000 is a good amount of classic Mercedes, given what we’ve seen the later 3.5 W111 coupes and convertibles sell for these days.

Museum-worthy Restored 1964 VW Karmann Ghia

It’s probably my life of modest means that attracts me to cars that provide a good value, allowing me a slightly more realistic daydream of ownership. Today’s Karmann Ghia is on the opposite end of the spectrum, a car that, while probably totally worth it, is seriously expensive thanks to a borderline-obsessive restoration just 2200 miles ago. It’s gorgeous inside and out, top to bottom, and the restorer apparently went to the greatest lengths to get every detail correct and perfect. It shows, and while I love me some function-over-form classic German cars, I certainly have respect for showroom-quality classics.

You will find cars sold at a cheaper price than this one, but you won’t find a Ghia with the attention to detail and correctness that this car has right down to the infinite details that took Brent years of research to complete.

I brought the body and floor pan back from California in 1998 and had planned to restore it myself, instead I sold the rust free project to Brent and he took the car to a level that simply cannot be put into words.

The car took over six years to restore to the state illustrated by the pictures and video posted in this ad. With only 2200 miles on the entire vehicle since restoration was complete back in 2003 this is virtually a new car, the interior still smells new and the car hasn’t sat outside for one night since being completed, nor has it seen a single rain drop.

Mechanically every nut, bolt and washer was removed. Instead of just replacing many of these fasteners with Chinese reproductions the original fasteners were blasted and reused, that same attention to detail and correctness can be found in every aspect of this car. The entire body chassis and subsystems were completely removed, restored and reassembled and nothing was left attached, this is a full ground up restoration.

The correct 1200cc engine is installed and is detailed right down to the original air filter assembly with the factory writing. The engine performs great and on a 550 mile trip to “Bug Jam” back in 2003 where the car was shot for a Hot VWs Feature it cruised easily at 75-80 MPH with exceptional fuel mileage as I followed Brent in my 912E.

The body of this vehicle is perfect, it has the slickest Gulf Blue paint that can be found and all work was done by Eddie Martin of Murphy North Carolina. The entire chassis was stripped and coated with POR-15 for durability, corrosion resistance and luster.

The car comes complete with the original key and a history that is very interesting. It was restored by a person who is more passionate for VWs than any other person I have met and the job was done with correctness and function. This vehicle is not a daily driver and should be considered a museum piece more than anything else. This Ghia has been restored to showroom condition.

Featured in the January 2005 issue of Hot VWs Magazine, this car has been recognized as one of the best examples of quality restoration in the country.

Totally awesome. I love the color and really appreciate that someone took the time to give this Ghia a rebirth. I can really see it sitting on a showroom floor just as the Beatles hit America. Would I pay $30k for it? No, but I’m not going to say it’s not worth it considering the time and love that went into making it perfect.
