1977 Porsche 911S Restomod

The other day, Rob wrote up a 1978 911 SC Restomod which backdated the look to the earlier 911s. It’s a popular trend, not only amongst late 70s and 80s 911s, but even 964s – the basis of choice for cars like the Singer 911. It makes sense; early 911s have gone through the roof and it’s much easier to replicate the look with a later chassis – plus, you get a faster car. Today’s 1977, though, goes a very different route and instead replicated the look of some of the famous 911 RSR race cars. Specifically, this car is made to replicate the early 1970s IROC 911 RSRs – the birth of the “whale tail” legend that continued with racing and street 911s. Looking like a mix of Singer and Rauh Welt Begriff cars, this Olive Green 911S is available on a budget:

1977 Porsche 924 with 39,000 Miles

Just the other day, I caught an episode of the British show Wheeler Dealers involving a Porsche 924. The basic premise of the show, if you haven’t seen it, is to find a classic car, do a light mechanical and cosmetic freshening, and sell the car. While “flipping” usually isn’t appreciated by enthusiasts, this show actually documents how a backyard mechanic can not only find these cars, but correct some of the obvious flaws easily to make a nice running driver. There aren’t many that really appreciate the original base Porsche 924, but in this episode the hosts restored an original 924 and talked about what a fun, affordable project they could be. It’s really amazing; for a car that was originally destined to be a Volkswagen coupe, it ironically probably would have been better valued had it ended up under the banner of its original more pedestrian marque. Find a 1970s Scirocco or Rabbit in clean, mostly original and serviceable condition with low miles and you’d have a bidding war. But we regularly find good condition Porsche 924s; for the most part, no one wants them:

Magnus Walker’s 1977 Porsche 911 Turbo Carrera

Here we have something special: a 1977 Porsche 911 Turbo Carrera owned and rebuilt by Magnus Walker, aka Urban Outlaw. Walker’s works run the gamut from original restorations to fully custom-modified cars and typically his builds center around early 911s from the ’60s and ’70s. This Turbo Carrera sits nearer the original end of his spectrum; a car he returned to glory rather than try to take it into another dimension. And perhaps that shouldn’t surprise us given how great the Turbo Carrera was from the beginning. The looks, the performance, and the spirit are all pure 911, but turned up by a few degrees. Upon first release the 911 Turbo used a 3.0 liter flat-six mated to a 4-speed transmission. These are most distinguished from turbos produced from 1978 and later by their use of the standard whale tail found on other 911 iterations rather than the tea-tray and intercooler of the 3.3 liter turbos. Powerful, challenging to drive, and beautifully proportioned. Porsche’s initial forays into turbocharging the 911 made its sporting pretensions crystal clear and they have hardly looked back.

1977 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0

In the car world ‘Carrera’ has become synonymous with the 911 and the excellent sporting prowess of these cars. While for modern 911s it also has become a somewhat standard moniker attached to them, in the early days it represented something special; it represented a 911 for which racers would clamor. Perhaps the last of those ‘special’ Carreras was the Carrera 3.0, which enjoyed a brief two year run from 1976-1977. Using a naturally aspirated version of the 3.0 flat-six found in the 930, the Carrera 3.0 followed in the footsteps of the Carreras that preceded it, though with time these had shifted gradually towards the luxury end of the scale. As with previous 911s of this vintage the Carrera 3.0 never was offered in the US market due to our emissions requirements so an imported Euro model was the only way these special 911s could be enjoyed on our shores. The particular example we have here is a 1977 Signal Orange Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0, located in Miami, with a stated 28,500 miles on it.

1977 Porsche 911S

It feels like lately we’ve come across 911s from this vintage quite a bit more frequently. I’m not sure if this is a case of sellers hoping to take advantage of the “rising tide raises all boats” phenomenon or if we’re just taking notice of these cars more frequently. Either way, here we have another example from the era spanning 1974-1977, this time a dark brown (perhaps Chocolate Brown?) 1977 Porsche 911S, located in Charlottesville, VA, with Cork interior and 93,043 miles on it. This particular example has some modifications to the engine and the interior of which any interested buyer will need to take account. With that said, I find the interior modifications to be particularly well done, providing both a functional and also attractive cockpit. While modified cars can be tough, if the other modifications have been executed with equal care as the interior, then that should provide some comfort about the performance of the car.
