As even 3-series models of real, full-blooded Alpinas go for big money, they pull up the wide range of tributes as well. Today’s E12 533i is more than just a sticker job, as it brings with it one of those cool, “back in the day this guy was the MAN!” stories. Here, BMW importer Mike Dietel is the hero with a magical line on Alpina parts who built up this 533i with Euro and Alpina parts when it was fresh from the dealership. On top of the unique provenance, a respected enthusiast spent a good amount of time and energy restoring it, yielding a gorgeous and unique 80s tuner car. It may not be straight from the Alpina shop, but that won’t stop the seller from asking for very serious money.

My one main complaint with my 1981 Rabbit Pickup was that the passenger compartment was a pretty tight squeeze between the low roof and too-close rear wall – beyond that, it was a hilarious, competent, unique, and fun-to-drive car. Today’s oddball Frankenstein monster fixes my one gripe by melding a Rabbit Hatchback with a Pickup, creating a Crew Cab Caddy reminiscent of Rutledge Wood’s limo on Top Gear America (I don’t blame you if you haven’t seen it). While the extra legroom and seating for four are nice additions and it allegedly runs and drives, this is clearly a half-baked project with many, many needs. The seller thinks its rarity makes it as valuable as a top-notch Caddy, but it would take a lot of time and money to make it even presentable.

Mk1 GTIs are getting harder to come by, so those enthusiasts looking for the affordable, tossable treat that it’s always been are going to have to start accepting some flaws to get behind the wheel. Today’s Giugiaro masterpiece comes in daily-driver form with 167k miles and some considerable blemishes, but it’s getting harder to find GTIs under $4k that aren’t basket cases. Yes, a few rust spots could use some attention, but it comes with a new sunroof to repair one of the glaring issues. The Mk3 leather seats are an attractive addition and the new wheels and tires look decent if overstretched. It’s going to be a project, but isn’t that what old VWs are supposed to be?

Porsche’s Sonderwunsch-programm (Special Wishes or now Porsche Exclusive) has been around for some time with the aim of providing its customers with opportunities to create unique color and trim combinations that allow their cars to stand apart from a standard model. Most commonly we see these features in the interior or as paint-to-sample exterior colors. The car we see here, a 1983 Porsche 930 Slantnose located in California, appears to have gone for the entire catalog with upgrades to the interior, a paint-to-sample exterior, along with the Slantnose option first made available in 1981. This 930 also was fitted with the power kit, which raised power to 331 hp, though sadly the engine has seen some modifications and those pieces are no longer fitted. The seller states that many of the original power kit components are included in the sale. It is obviously quite rare to come across any Special Wishes 911, but it is even more rare to find an early 930 Slantnose, especially here in the States where the car was not available until 1986. Engine modifications aside, this is a fantastic looking 930 that absolutely stands apart from other examples of its day.
