1987 Porsche 944S

For 1987, there were some changes in store for the Porsche 944. On the Turbo front, this model would become the first production vehicle to be equipped with driver and passenger side airbags as standard equipment. Lower down the range, there was the introduction of the 944S. This model had a 2.5 liter, twin cam, 16 valve four cylinder under the hood. With improved engine management and higher compression, this powerplant was good for 189 horsepower and a run to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds. Even in today’s environment, these are stellar performers, with great power to weight ratio and impressive handling prowess. This 1987 944S for sale in Connecticut is in great shape and looks to have lived a very easy 80,000 miles.

1987 Audi 4000CS Quattro

“It was bound to happen”. Over the past few months we’ve seen a spike in Audi 4000 Quattro prices, and with the spike the nice examples have started to come out of the woodwork. As a $2,500 car, you keep it until it dies. As a $5,000 car, you treat it well and it changes hands from time to time. Once prices crest $10,000 – prices that 4000s haven’t brought since the 1990 – people start flipping them. It makes sense; the 4000 Quattro is a great car but for $13,000 you can get many nicer, faster cars. Last week I wrote up a Tornado Red 1985 4000S Quattro that had reported fresh paint and seemed to be a good example, but failed to push a price as high as I expect the owner was looking for. Today’s example is arguably a bit nicer, but shown in the same shade – will you be seeing red?

1987 Volkswagen GTI

It’s been a while since I’ve found a GTI that sticks out, but in a nice green on gold BBS wheels and an old-school BBS bodykit, this one will definitely turn a few heads. It seems like its been around a bit (Autocheck shows 9 owners), but the GTI is probably the best “project car” to continue working on without fear of something that you can’t find/fix/replace. Similar to the exterior, the interior has sweet Recaros and some other add-ons that are fine but not great. Overall it’s a pretty good GTI with many desirable upgrades inside and out. A little simplification would help it become a sweeter ride.

1987 Porsche 911 Carrera

The price of nostalgia. The question comes up fairly frequently: why pay so much for an older car when newer cars offer much better performance and, in some cases, cost less money? It’s a fair question, especially for a marque who takes so much pride in its racing pedigree. If we set aside collector cars, bought principally as an investment, and focus on cars intended to be driven frequently the answer to such a question becomes rather murky. For many buyers it simply comes down to nostalgia; these were cars of their youth or perhaps a buyer even owned one previously and wants to relive that experience. Those feelings are then compounded by the yearning for a car from before the period when electronics took over, safety regulations went overboard and cars simply got bigger. Whatever the reason, it’s clear that these are decisions made with the heart rather than the mind, and that does have a price. This all brings us to the car featured here: a Guards Red 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera with Tan interior. While the 3.2 Carrera remains relatively inexpensive for a 911, prices continue to rise and we’re even approaching the point where a high mileage example such as the one featured here can no longer be had for less than $20K. Such is the price of nostalgia.

1987 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16

$_57

The 1980s were quite a decade. Maybe I’m nostalgic because my formative years span that decade, but this was a golden era for motor racing, with Group B rallying and the series this Mercedes-Benz was devised for, Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, or DTM. A number of great cars have appeared in this series, but none so legendary as the matchup between the BMW E30 and the Mercedes-Benz 190E Cosworth. While it’s generally agreed the BMW had a bit of the edge on the Mercedes, the Benz had plenty to offer in its own right. It wasn’t outright fast in street form, it had an increase in power over the stock models, a dogleg manual gearbox and tuned suspension that was uncommon for Mercedes at the time. This 190E 2.3-16 for sale in Austin, Texas Miami is a sympathetically cared for example with a just a few issues that need sorting.
