1992 Volkswagen Corrado SLC

$_57

It’s unfortunate that Volkswagen has held firm in its refusal to bring the Mk3 Scirocco stateside. They feel the GTI is adequate to fill the sports car gap in the US market, last filled by this car the Corrado, since it’s exit from the US market in 1994. The choice for lower priced sports coupes is a bit slim these days, especially if you’re in the market for a German manufactured one. Go back two decades, however, and you’ll arrive at the end of the Corrado production run, which found the newly introduced VR6 engine slotted under the hood. The Corrado SLC, as it was dubbed, solved many of the teething issues inherent in the G-lader supercharged 1.8 liter engine that preceded it. This Corrado with 112,000 miles on the clock is largely original with records stretching back over a decade.

1992 BMW 318i Convertible

$_57

Being an East Coaster, I look upon car enthusiasts in California with envy. Washington, DC isn’t really a car guy kind of town. There’s a lot of fancy new machinery tooling around the block here, but anyone can go out and buy a new car provided they have the resources. The classics, however, seem scarce. As such, it makes me lust after a modern classic like this BMW 318i Cabriolet even more, just to stand out from the herd. There seems to be a never ending supply of clean, rust-free classics on the left coast and this open-roofed Bimmer fits the description.

1992 Volkswagen Golf Country

$_57 (2)

Any good enthusiast of foreign cars should have a list of which unicorns they want for each new year of eligible 25-year old import status. This Golf Country reminds me that 2017 will be a big year for me. Just look at it. The first time I saw and found out about the Golf Country I bled from my ears because my brain was spinning so hard. What… The… F? Lifted 4WD Mk2 Golf seemed like the coolest oddball that I’d never heard of. The one comes adorned with awesome Country decals with a ragtop sunroof and has covered just 113k miles. I’m setting an alarm to remind me to set my eBay followed searched to Golf Countrys in three years.

Tres Quattros – A Brace of Silver Arrow C4s

Recently I’ve written up a few tasty European market S6 quattros, but what’s available on this side of the pond? Well, even though the used market is a little different here than it is in Europe, there are still several great options in you’re into the C4 chassis and its legendary 2.2 20V turbocharged motor. Today I’ve got three examples of one of the more rare colors to see on the C4 – silver, and two with grey leather. Which will be the one you’d like? Let’s start with the oldest:

10K Friday: 1992 Volkswagen Jetta GLI with VR6

$_3 (2)

One of the things that initially intrigued me so much with VWs back in the day was the concept that Volkswagen Auto Group parts were much more like Lego than other makes; you could grab different pieces and improve and modify as you pleased. This Jetta takes that concept to 11, OEM+ing the heck out of 1992 Jetta GLI. With enough specific year-model-piece details to make your head spin (88 Jetta bumper, 92 GLI spoiler, Italian grill, 97 GTI shifterbox, etc…), it’s essentially a greatest hits of Volkswagen performance. Yet unlike a greatest hits set from auteurs like Pink Floyd or the Beatles, which remove the context which amplified the songs’ greatness, this GLI makes all the pieces work in harmony for a result greater than the sum of its parts. I’ve said before that the Mk2 GLI reminds me of a frugal E28 M5/535is, and this is no exception. Looks great all around, must go great with the VR6, and is all clearly chosen for specific gratification. If any Mk2 Jetta is going to pull $10k, it might as well be this one.
