1993 Mercedes-Benz G36 AMG

The 1990s was a time of transition at Mercedes-Benz. Model nomenclature evolved from numbers at the beginning of each model to a letter, Porsche was commissioned for a super sedan in the form of the 500E/E500 and AMG, the engineering firm responsible for a lot of Mercedes-Benz motorsport success and performance oriented street vehicles became a subsidiary under the Three Pointed Star umbrella. Their first official vehicle was the W202 based C36, a compact sports sedan intended to battle for enthusiasts’ wallets right in BMW’s Motorsport backyard. Right before the C36 appeared, an AMG oddity appeared, something that would grab the attention of the burgeoning SUV market: the G36 AMG.

This pumped Geländewagen appeared some years before Mercedes-Benz would flood the US market with G500s, G550s and AMG tuned examples that have become so popular with the rich and famous. With a breathed on 3.6 liter inline-6 under the hood, this G-wagen would give off-roaders a bit more juice when tackling those steep hills with this truck’s renowned three locking differentials.

20K Friday – Super Sedan Edition: E28 M5 v. W124 500E – Which Would You Choose?

What’s going on here? Tax returns are still heading out and we’re feeling rich? Well, not so much but it is nice to dream. While normally on Friday we look for the best deals, this duo was too good to pass up. You could argue about who started the super-sedan trend, but there’s no doubt that the Germans perfected it. Two of the most memorable of these are the E28 M5 and W124 500E; blunt instruments that achieve their goals of luxurious speed in very different ways. We’ve covered many M5s recently of different generations, but as I mentioned in the M5 Roundup, while it’s tempting to buy the cheapest M5 you can get your hands on that’s often a poor decision; in many ways, the same could be said about the 500E. So, here are two quite nice examples to choose from – which would be your dream? Let’s start with the M5:

1993 Volkswagen Eurovan Westfalia Weekender

My proclivities lie in the 80s, especially when it comes to VW Vans. The old buses are cool, but after riding in my brother’s college-edition enough, it’s a little post-war for me. The Eurovan has always seemed like a capable fellow, but I was initially turned off by front wheel drive and less distinctive styling than the Vanagon. A friend is in search of one to someday be the ultimate family vacation vehicle, and despite being the more modern Van, they can be had more affordably than Vanagons. Today’s eschews the bland looks with an amazing original teal paint job. It’s put on some miles, but that’s what adventure vans are for!

1993 Porsche 928 GTS Coupe

It has been nearly 40 years since Porsche first brought the 928 into the world and almost 20 years since the last one rolled off the line. It began life with a 4.5 liter V8 producing 219 hp and saw gradual increases in displacement and power before finally reaching the 5.4 liter 345 hp producing V8 of the 928 GTS. Cosmetically, the 928 saw a similar level of gradual evolution retaining the same basic design and appearance, but in a more refined package. From inception to final production these were what a proper GT should be: a car combining luxury and comfort with performance that was effortless yet unstrained. The example we have featured here is a paint-to-sample Silver 1993 Porsche 928 GTS Coupe with 5-speed manual transmission, located in California. This particular 928 also holds a place in Porsche media history, which should provide its owner with a nice bit of trivia.

1993 Audi 90CS Quattro – REVISIT

You ever see a unique car and think “I’ve seen that one before…”. Well, in this case, you’re not seeing things. This 1993 Audi 90CS Quattro has graced these pages a few times, making me wonder a bit what the issue is. First Paul wrote it up in April, 2013 for 8,900 with 97,000 miles. It reappeared in September with 89,497 miles, new wheels, a different description from a different seller, and failed to sell twice. Now back up with a third seller with a different description, a few less miles at 89,355 and the original listing photos, asking price and wheels, color me confused. Still, it’s a nice example that looks to have a lot of potential even if it’s clearly a bit overpriced:
