On a recent visit to London, I stopped through the Audi showroom on 75 Piccadilly. Sitting front and center was an RS6 Avant, a beastly estate which has become quite a popular family conveyance for the monied classes in the Big Smoke. Somehow, over 550 horsepower seems a bit ludicrous in a town where you’ll be getting nowhere fast. But where did all this horsepower madness start? Well, right here with this car. The RS2 Avant. This special Audi was produced in the same factory that brought us that other GCFSB favorite, the Mercedes-Benz 500E/E500. This particular RS2 Avant for sale at 4Star Classics is a rare right-hand drive example, one of less than 200 so equipped.

These days, Mercedes hasn’t released too many limited edition models outside of their in house tuning arm, AMG. Before the days of AMG proliferation, Mercedes would release a special edition model from time to time, such as this 1995 SL500 Mille Miglia. Built to commemorate Stirling Moss’s win of the historic 1955 Mille Miglia road race. This R129, available as an SL320 or SL500, was available only in Brilliant Silver Metallic, equipped with Evo II six-spoke polished alloys and a red and black leather interior complemented by carbon-fibre trim. The side fender grills were also given a rather unique checquered flag treatment that, upon close inspection, is a clever collection of chrome squares. This right-hand drive example for sale in the UK has covered less than 70,000 miles and is a great modern day tribute to a legendary period in Mercedes-Benz racing history.

Comments closedWhile perhaps not quite as exciting a drive as the E63 AMG Wagon from Andrew yesterday, our second new author, Craig, takes a look today at a beautiful and frugal classic Mercedes-Benz sedan in the making in this 1995 E300 Diesel. Please join me in welcoming Craig and enjoy his investigation of this no-spark!

If you’re looking for an affordable daily driver and you read this blog, you’re probably on the hunt for something that’s safe and reliable with a dash of Teutonic style. Those are exactly the qualities you’d find in a W124 E-class. Produced between 1984 and 1996, the W124 hails from a period in Mercedes-Benz’s history when handsome form followed well thought-out function. Brawny, angular lines and a classic profile sit atop a chassis that delivered class-leading levels of safety and reliability at the time of its unveiling. The design still holds up well today; even now, the doors on these cars still shut with a satisfying “thunk,†reminding you that once upon a time, Mercedes really did produce the most finely-engineered cars in the world.
This late-model 1995 E300 Diesel would be ideal for the commuter who desires a bit of understated style along with the frugality of an oil-burner. In this case, that’s quite literally true, since this example comes with a vegetable oil tank in the trunk.

2 CommentsHere is something we definitely don’t see everyday. From the outset I’ll say that there are a lot of questions to be asked about this 911, but once those questions are answered then this one probably won’t be around long. Here we have a 1995 Porsche 911 Carrera RS, located in Texas, with 17,893 miles on it. Since the 993 Carrera RS was never imported into the United States and because we have not yet reached the 25 year window in which such a car can more easily be imported, I’m always curious how the rare few of these that do exist here manage to find their way to our shores. There are always ways to get around such obstacles and this isn’t the first one I’ve come across, but in each case there lingers that same aura of mystery. Those concerns cover our first set of questions, and frankly those are probably the most important as they help establish the authenticity of this 911 and its road legality. I should state, this does appear to be a genuine RS so I don’t want to heap doubt upon it in that regard, but at this sort of price caution is always warranted.

1 CommentA few days ago driving through traffic, a lean, low and angular shape drifted in between cars ahead of me. It stood out mostly because it was so different than the pool of SUVs it swam through. Like a shark parting a school of mackerel, it was a beautiful 840ci with M-System II wheels fit, and it was positively beautiful to see. What really struck me was the size though, more than anything else. I’ve never really thought of the 8-series as a small car – but there it was, dwarfed by the modern automobiles that surrounded it. Most other drivers ignored the door-wedge profile, but I sat transfixed remembering how revolutionary this car was when it was launched. When I happened across this 1995 840ci in my searches, a car which Paul featured back in January, I couldn’t help but want to write it up:
