1997 Porsche 911 Carrera S

Another interesting blue Porsche 911. Last week I featured a 911SC and a 964 in very different shades of blue and today we have a 993. I guess I just need to find a 3.2 Carrera and then something from the water-cooled generation to get some completeness! Blue is one of my favorite colors on a car so it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that so many of them catch my eye. Like with many colors, over the years Porsche has provided nearly the entire landscape of possible variations of blue from which owners could choose, from wild pastels like Mexico or Riviera Blue to the very subtle like last week’s Glacier Blue 911SC. Whether light or dark the color tends to work really well providing an interesting alternative to any of the very common silvers, whites, and blacks, but without necessarily veering into showy territory. Here we have another rarely seen variant that this time drifts a little toward the purple side of the spectrum, though only slightly: a Zenith Blue Metallic 1997 Porsche 911 Carrera S, located in Brooklyn, with Tan interior and 65,400 miles on it.

1997 Mercedes-Benz SL600

The Mercedes-Benz R129 SL is on the cusp of collector status. Fellow GCFSB contributor Andy McCulley was in Washington, DC this week for a conference and we hung out a bit during the weekend, with much car talk on the agenda. After passing an SL500 Silver Arrow parked on the street, he opined that that is one R129 that will be worth money in the near future. I don’t doubt it. Few of them were built, with only 100 SL600s receiving the Silver Arrow trim. This SL600 for sale in Massachusetts might not be a Silver Arrow, but the V12 models are certainly more exclusive than their V8 siblings, with this car’s Designo trim adding on an extra serving of exclusivity.

10K Friday: BMW 3-series Showdown

Rightly so, I’ve been accused of comparing everything to BMWs – so for today’s 10K Friday, I thought why not compare BMWs to BMWs? Part of the reason I compare various cars I write up to the alternative BMW products is because for some time they have been considered the benchmark, and their popularity from new to the used classic market means that they set the pricing trends against which others can be judged. That’s especially true of the 3 series; for some time, the go-to performance product from Germany, increasingly many earlier generations of the 3 are being viewed as not only collectable, but indeed as investments. So, what does your $10,000 budget buy these days? I’ve rounded up five examples from the first five generations, covering nearly every configuration the small executive platform has been available in. Which is the winner?

1997 BMW M3

While the BMW E30 M3 is experiencing epic levels of popularity, for yours truly, it’s not my favorite of the lot. No, my favorite would be the E36 M3. I’ve always had a thing for this car, even if it’s heart was based on the M50 inline-6 found in lesser E36 models. There is something about the crisp lines of the E36 that grabs my attention, as the E46 which followed was a bit softer in appearance. Today, we no longer have a two-door M3. Instead, we’ve moved up a number to the M4. Even though it’s “technically” an M3, I’m not too keen on driving a car with the same name as a motorway in the United Kingdom. So let’s take a look at this 1997 M3 for sale in Illinois. Finished in Estoril Blue, this one has yet to cross the 70,000 mile mark.

1997 Porsche 911 Turbo S

Here’s a rare thing: these days the only thing more rare than a limited-production air-cooled 911 is a limited-production air-cooled 911 with a decent number of miles on it. And that’s exactly what we have here with this Black on Black 1997 Porsche 911 Turbo S, located in Northern Virginia, that has seen 105,280 miles over the course of its life. While I’m sure we have all suspected such cars to exist we almost never come across them and for this to be the last and most valuable of the air-cooled Turbos (excepting, of course, the 993 GT2) I’m shocked to see it. It’s fantastic though! The current owner of this car, who has had it since 2001, certainly appears to have gotten the most out of this purpose-built machine. With the market for air-cooled Turbos in the midst of a precipitous climb where might potential buyers value this example with such high mileage? Hopefully this auction will shed some light.
