Ever dream about walking into a dealer, picking out the most expensive model, then clicking every box on the option list? Even more, add in a bunch of other special requests and options that aren’t even offered and tell them to build you that. Well, that is exactly what the original owner of this 2019 Porsche 911 GT2 RS did. On top of the $293,200 base price, this owner added another $149,340 in options for a total price of $442,540. Yes, that is correct. $149,340 in options, $92,250 of which were the coveted CXX “Special Wishes” that needed to be approved by Porsche. Of course, it is finished in paint-to-sample Brewster Green and the interior? Have you ever heard of Noto Green leather?

2019 Porsche 911 Speedster

Well, that didn’t last long.

Porsche released the 991 Speedster late last year and it didn’t disappoint. It was a GT3 Touring with a raked windshield, a tiny manually-operated soft top, and a slightly tweaked interior. They produced 1,948 of them and naturally people wanted them badly. That meant paying over sticker in a lot of cases and even more outrageous prices. How much over sticker? Sometimes over $100,000. As luck would have it, turns out demand wasn’t so great after all. I say that because now we are in May and there are still brand new 2019 Speedster sitting in dealer showrooms with delivery mileage on them. I wonder if the same people who paid $400,000 for these cars are the ones who paid $700,000 to get a 911R?

2019 Audi RS5 Sportback

In case you hadn’t noticed, I’m a huge Audi fan. Some Most consider this a huge flaw. But the company has emerged from fringe technology fighting to compete with the established giants in the 1980s to be the standard for interiors and, even in some cases, performance in a daily driver. And as a result, they’ve become incredibly popular. For some reason I can’t fully identify, as they’ve become more popular I’ve become increasingly disenchanted with the brand. They all look broadly similar, they all are way too complicated, and they all are way out of my price range.

But once in a while one pops up that grabs my attention. I live by a port that delivers new Audis and Volkswagens, and ride my bike by the long rows of oh-so-boring white, grey, silver, silver-grey, off-white, black, black-grey, grey-black, and charcoal SUVs that pile into this country. But last year I caught sight of a green RS5. I never stop to look at these cars, but I stopped to look at that one. It was damn impressive, and I internally applauded the buyer who sat down and refused to buy a black car. On top of that, they refused to put black wheels on it, too.

Lo and behold, I found its four-door twin this week:

2019 Porsche Macan

2019 Porsche Macan

Last week I took a look at a 2017 Porsche 911 finished in Miami Blue that surprisingly wasn’t a paint-to-sample color. Porsche is dipping back into the popular color game as options now, but of course, that comes at a cost. Miami Blue was a $3,140 extra cost over a standard color, but that is much cheaper than paying another $7,000 for a true custom blend. Believe it or not, you can even give some wild colors on the SUVs, which of course brings up to today’s car.

This 2019 Macan is finished in Mamba Green Metallic. This, along with six other colors, was just a $700 extra. You could get Miami Blue, along Chalk and Carmine Red, for a much bigger premium of $3,120, which seems odd since there is physically more paint on a Macan than a 911. The even more interesting thing is that if you really wanted to go paint-to-sample on your Macan, you have to hand over $11,430. Yes, I’d think I’d be sticking with one of those $700 colors.

2019 Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS

I have to hand it to Porsche, they really nailed it when it came to their GTS trim line on the 911. It slotted in perfectly between the S and GT cars for those buyers who wanted more, but didn’t want to pay GT prices or live with the harshness they can dish out. When they launched the 991.2 C4 GTS, it sure seemed like it was knocking on the door of the GT3. The new twin-turbo 3.0L with the PDK gearbox could whip it to 60 mph is just 3.3 seconds. That is just .1 second slower than the 991.1 GT3. Seems like a heck of a value at a $135,000 base price back when these were new. Even better, you could get it with the 7-speed manual gearbox. What isn’t to like?
