The 1970s Porsche 911 Carrera RSR are without a doubt one of my favorite race cars. Stretching the limits of that rear-engine design, Porsche employed both monstrous rear tires and aerodynamic aids to help tame the serious amount of grunt they were able to extract from the race prepared flat-6. And while I’m not alone in loving the RSR, not many were made leading to a fair amount of replicas of the various iterations. Some, like the last RSR replica we featured, take the iconic IROC cars as their inspiration, while others replicate more unique examples. But over the past few years backdating Carrera 3.2s and 964s has become popular, and it comes as no surprise to see today’s example – a 1984 Carrera 3.2 that’s been given the full-on RSR look – but unlike many other replicas, has remained streetable:
Given all this talk of stock market fluctuations and an economic recovery that has gone through fits and starts, where is a good place to park your money? Time in memorial has shown that a Porsche 911 is perhaps one of the strongest automotive investments out there. While desirability has come and gone with everything from Hemi Cudas to certain Ferrari models, the 911 has always been on the collectors’ radar. With two generations of water-cooled 911s behind us now, the earlier air-cooled 911s seems to keep creeping up in value year after year. This triple black 3.2 Targa for sale in California is an example of just how long these sports cars will last if care if lavished on them.
I have several times bemoaned the fact that, until recently, Volkswagen opted to not bring the 4-door Golf R32 to the United States. However, what they did offer for fans of utility was the Audi A3 3.2 quattro. It was a very expensive luxury counterpoint to the Golf R32 that we often feature, and with effectively the same running gear performance was nearly identical. They’re fairly rare to come by, even in comparison to the pretty rare Golf R32 – most likely due to the hefty premium that Audi charged which put the 3.2 A3 squarely in line with even more commodious options like the A4 2.0T quattro Avant. Once in a while they do pop up for sale though, as a stealthy silver one has today – just in time for the inclement weather in New England:
The eighties were a time of experimentation in outrageousness when it came to automotive styling. From the flared gills of the Ferrari Testarossa to wide fendered hot rods from the Mercedes-Benz tuning firm, AMG, the sky was the limit. There was one styling modification that I was never too particularly fond of, and it came by way of the number 505, otherwise known as the factory option code for Flachbau (slantnose). This option eviscerated the classic front end profile of the 911 for a decidedly eighties appearance by way of a wedge shape front end with pop-up headlamps. Who ever would go to the lengths of modifying a classic design like the 911 was beyond me. But, only a limited run of these were manufactured, much to the joy of purists everywhere. Perhaps this spoke to how popular this option was amongst 911 buyers? Whatever the case may be, this Slantnose Cabriolet for sale in New Jersey is but a handful that were produced in the 3.2 Carrera’s final year.
It’s a dilemma that hits every car enthusiast at least once or twice in a lifetime: how much is good enough? Whether it’s a restoration project or improving our everyday driver, we’re always looking for ways to improve our rides.
