10K Friday Performance Edition: M3 v. 944 Turbo v. CLK500 v. S4 v. GTi

Well, I hope this will stir some interest, as I think this is a bit of an interesting comparison. What level of performance can you buy for $10,000 (give or take) these days? Surprisingly, there are a lot of options – and those options vary pretty seriously in their execution and packages; there’s a wagon and a sports car, two sedan-based coupes and a hatchback. Engines range from a 2 liter turbo to a V8, with a bit of everything in between. Yet, what appears to be a very strange comparison linked only by price is revealed to be much closer when you look at performance figures:

E36 M3: 240 hp, 0-60 6.0 seconds, 3,200 lbs
944 Turbo: 220 hp, 0-60 5.9 seconds, 2,900 lbs
CLK500: 302 hp, 0-60 5.7 seconds, 3,800 lbs
S4 Avant: 250 hp, 0-60 5.6 seconds, 3,700 lbs
GTi: 200 hp, 0-60 6.6 seconds, 3,200 lbs

The range is much closer than you’d expect – especially when you consider that these figures could easily be equaled in margin of error, driver skill and reaction time. In the twisties, the lower powered cars like the GTi catch up to the higher power CLK and S4. All are, in one way or another, practical choices. Some are destined (or already) classics, while others will likely fade away. So what would be your choice? Let’s start with an M3 we’ve already seen:

Tuner Tuesday: 1986 Porsche 911 Rinspeed R69

Oh, the 1980s. Full of crazy creations, custom calamities and questionable creativity. If you wanted a crazy tuner car back then, there were plenty of options from mild to wild; some of them we’ve covered, such as the DP slantnose cars and the Koenig widebody 560SEC Mercedes-Benz. But if one company has consistently gone above and beyond, it would have to be Rinspeed. Afterall, they did made a 911 turbo truck that changed color and roofline and was encrusted in jewels. That takes a really special mind – one that most would argue should probably be in a straight jacket. Nevertheless, there’s always a market for the crazy Rinspeed creations, and one of their less extreme models has come up for sale. Based upon a 911 but borrowing water-cooled bits for a unique look, check out the Rinspeed R69:

1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Club Sport – REVISIT

The 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Club Sport we originally featured last year has been relisted once again with a Buy It Now price of $175,000.

My favorite generation of the 911 is the 3.2 Carrera. This is the 911 that spanned much of my formative years and bridges the gap neatly between the vintage and modern era. Those are just two reasons these cars draw me in. There was a lot of choice to be had across the range, with normally aspirated and turbocharged flat sixes, Coupe, Cabriolet and Targa bodystyles and even the resurrection of the legendary Speedster name in 1989. However, there is one 3.2 that, in my opinion, trumps them all. It happens to be one of the rarest 911s ever. The Club Sport.

Even amongst some 911 enthusiasts, this model is a bit of a dark horse, due to the fact that only 28 were ever sold in the US market. But for those in the know, all they need to hear are those two magical words and their radar is up. This was a lightweight special with a blueprinted engine, sport suspension and more aggressive brakes. There were also some factory deletes such as air conditioning, radio, rear seating and front fog lights. This Club Sport for sale in New York is one of two sold in silver metallic and is the only one to be manufactured with an electric sunroof.

Another week, another Porsche 930 Slantnose for sale. Seems like they are everywhere, doesn’t it? As soon as the last Slantnose Cabriolet we featured went live, it sold within one day. If red was a bit too outlandish on that particular car, perhaps this 1989 930 Slantnose Cabriolet for sale from our reader Frank may be more to your liking. Painted in a more reserved Black over Linen combination, this car represents the final year for the 930 Turbo, the sole year to feature a 5-speed manual gearbox with the 3.3 liter turbocharged flat-6.

1989 Porsche 911 Speedster

I suppose it is a testament to the current Porsche market that it seems like we are more frequently coming across attempted sales of the 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster. Harking back to the original 356 Speedster, these featured the mechanicals of the 3.2 Carrera but added a raked, removable, windscreen and removed the rear seats in favor of a hard tonneau cover. As an homage to a weekend racer, these were always destined to be collectors and, like most, the example featured here has predominantly spent its life in a garage as it shows only 8,639 miles on the clock and appears nearly spotless inside and out.
