As I’ve more frequently turned my attention to modern 911s, largely in an attempt to locate better performance value, I am still reminded of the 930. The 911 has become quite refined over the years. Porsche has now long been a luxury brand and it is expected that its 911 Turbo will carry on that luxury. While the 930 wasn’t exactly a no-frills 911, it also would be hard to describe as refined. It was more than capable of biting a ham-fisted driver and strictly on appearance refinement hardly would be its calling card. That path lay for Porsche’s own venture into very high dollar territory with the 959. The 930 remained a menace.

It is that quality which always brings me back to it. Modern 911 Turbos are faster and more capable performers in almost any conditions, all while being able to serve as a daily driver. In many cases on the second-hand market they’re cheaper too. So why the 930? For me it just takes one look.

Double Take: Brown 911s – Classic vs Modern

I will admit here I am really stretching the boundaries of what makes sense for a double take. I had already come across this Nutmeg Brown Metallic 1985 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe and wanted to write it up because of its fairly rare and unusual exterior color. I like darker metallic browns a lot and we almost never see them outside of a few years in the 70s and 80s. I’ll admit that brown isn’t the most appealing car color for many, but in the right circumstances it can work quite well.

Then I came across a much newer 911 in a very similar color and thought, why not? So if you are a fan of these dark brown exteriors this might give you a sense of your options and, what for me is perhaps the most interesting aspect of this, the relative cost and performance that’s available to you. Let’s look at the Nutmeg Brown Carrera first:

2005 Porsche 911 Turbo S Coupe

This 911 brings with it a nice confluence of attributes that should make it quite desirable. Assuming, of course, you’re seeking out all of those attributes. Here we have a 2005 Porsche 911 Turbo S Coupe located in Knoxville. It has the desirable 6-speed manual transmission and has done 61,419 miles. It also is equipped with the very rare Turbo Aerokit. We saw this aerokit recently on a standard 996TT and on that car it created quite a juxtaposition between the exterior and interior aspects of the car. On this Turbo S, there is no juxtaposition. It’s full menace and the aerokit simply provides an additional dose of aggression. In all black it may not turn heads, slipping by almost unnoticed, but for any driver it’s sure to leave an impression.

1976 Porsche 930 Turbo Carrera

It feels like it’s been a long time since I posted an early 930. Like many early editions of a model there is a rawness to them not replicated by later versions whose evolutionary changes sought to smooth the rough edges. There are a few currently up for sale, but I’ve featured them previously. Meaning they aren’t selling. That might tell us something about the current market for these Porsches and helps explain why more of them are not coming up for sale. But this is the first I’ve seen of this one.

According to the CoA this is a Platinum Metallic 1976 Porsche 930 Turbo Carrera with Cinnamon interior and optional sport seats. It now sits with just 35,770 miles on it. The color combination, especially with the contrasting painted Fuchs wheels, really looks outstanding and the overall condition is promising. Given its age it looks to have been very well cared for.

1993 Porsche 911 Turbo S Leichtbau

During my time writing about 911s I’m sure I’ve stated that quite a few different models might be my favorite. At one time or another certain cars always strike me and remind me of what it is that I love so much about them. Each model has its strengths and pulls at my imagination in varying ways.

Let it be known that this is my actual favorite model: the 1993 Porsche 911 Turbo S Leichtbau (lightweight). It’s the GT2 before the GT2 existed: a stripped out, higher horsepower, version of the standard 911 Turbo produced in limited numbers. Unlike the later ’94 Turbo S this one is based off of the 964’s original 3.3 liter turbocharged flat-6 and produces 381 hp, an increase of 61 hp over the standard Turbo. Weight savings stripped out nearly 430 pounds.

Visually the Turbo S is distinguished by its unique rear spoiler, Speedline wheels, and rear air inlets. There were 86 in total produced, with 67 of those coming in left-hand drive. The one we see here is even further distinguished by utilizing custom coloring throughout and it sits with a scant 95 km on the clock. Needless to say, this is a very rare opportunity to purchase one of the very rarest high-performance Porsches. It will be up for auction March 9 at the Gooding & Company Amelia Island auctions.
