1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe

Let’s get right to it: I want to take a look at a very low mileage Glacier Blue 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe located in New York. Glacier Blue 911s have graced these pages a couple of times in the past and it’s a color that always draws attention. But here we start to see the fullness of its color to much better effect. The negative to a color like Glacier Blue is that in many lighting conditions it looks washed out, basically a dull white, and it is hard to capture the color so that it actually looks blue. They’ve done that here, perhaps through a combination of better photography and some touching up, but they’ve done it none the less. Combined with a navy blue interior we experience the full force of the color’s name: it’s appearance is icy like the waves of a cold sea crashing against a glacier. It’s a strange environment to model upon a car’s appearance, but it does produce a sort of natural look that is quite different from the typical earthy colors we associate with nature. As we’d expect the combination is quite rare – stated to be only 160 in this exterior color; no word on how many in this combination – and with only 19,615 miles on this one we also can expect a high price. But this high?

1995 Porsche 911 Carrera RS Clubsport

I’m going to break away rather abruptly from looking to find 911s we can all aspire to in order to look at a 911 we can aspire to in a different sort of way. More along the lines of peak aspiration I guess you’d say. For buyers for whom the standard 911 has proved too soft or too refined – basically too suited for the masses – Porsche has offered their RS model. It hasn’t always been available, especially during the company’s leaner years, but when available the Carrera RS (along with the later GT3 RS) has offered the sort of pared down high performance that few buyers desire and even fewer would actually purchase. For the 993, Porsche took this ethos a step further offering a Clubsport option for the RS. The package effectively deleted everything from the interior that was unnecessary, including the carpets, and then welded in a full roll cage to provide extra degrees of rigidity and safety to the chassis. In what I can only assume was a strange twist of comedy, the original purchaser of this 1995 Porsche 911 Carrera RS Clubsport asked Porsche to put the air-conditioning back in the car. While we might surmise that request was because the owner wanted to actually drive the darn thing and thus needed at least that small bit of comfort, this RS sits with fewer than 20K miles on it. If we want to look on the bright side, I suppose it makes a very rare car even rarer still.

1991 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Cabriolet

I guess I couldn’t stay aware from pretty and interesting 911s for very long – not that there’s anything wrong with that. While I sit inside awaiting our 48 hours of rain to cease why not take in the oceanic feel of this Cobalt Blue Metallic 1991 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Cabriolet. Last week I featured an Amethyst 964 fitted with a white leather interior and in that case the interior didn’t really work for me. The contrast seemed too strong – though some commenters did enjoy it so there was appeal. Here we have a similar white leather interior, with similar black accents to that Amethyst Carrera, and I think the combination works extremely well. The contrast seems just right and the overall feel that these colors project fits the ethos of a Cabriolet to good effect. It certainly does not hurt that Cobalt Blue is such a stunning exterior color.

1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe

Many times in our search for interesting and rare cars to feature we pass over the regular cars; cars that are in good shape and would make for great options for many prospective buyers, but that don’t immediately jump off the page. Or, at least, I find myself doing that. The negative side of this, of course, is that these are the cars that typically come with the most reasonable prices, a point that is particularly true with the 911 where any sense of exclusivity quickly raises the bar on value. I think this 911 fits within that ‘regular car’ category and while we can never be totally assured of such the hope is that it will also come at a decent price. Here we have a Guards Red 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe, located in Oregon, with 98,750 miles on it.

Amethyst Pearl 1992 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Coupe

I don’t know that this 1992 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Coupe is a 1 of 1, as the seller hints, but given the rare color combination and a rare option or two we’re certainly looking at a 911 whose owner isn’t likely to see another one coming the other way. The colors return us to my current fascination with purple 911s and this one, Amethyst Pearl, is one of the better options along that spectrum. It’s not as dark as Aubergine, but also not as bright, i.e. flashy, as Amaranth Violet so it walks that fine line that I think a color like purple really needs to walk. It’s beautiful and interesting. The white leather interior is sort of like a punch in the face. While I don’t normally associate white with brightness when considering the color palette, it definitely comes across that way here. I don’t know that it works, at least not for me, but the contrast is interesting and is certain to provide an avenue for discussion. We definitely can’t call it monotone!
