1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe

I have focused much more on the value end of the 911 spectrum this week and the car featured here falls into a bit of a middle position along that scale. The 1983 and 1984 model years tend to represent the best value opportunities depending upon whether you would prefer the 911SC or the 3.2 Carrera. You cannot really go wrong with either, but each has its own personality that may suit some better than others. Overall, however, the key is finding one in the condition and with the mileage that makes you most comfortable – and that fits within your budget. Here we have one from the lower-mileage section of the market: a Grand Prix White 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe, located in Florida, with 59,900 miles on it. These are the 911s that, for many of us, invoke the most nostalgia for the marque and they came along at an important time for the model itself. That they can still be had for fairly reasonable values makes them all the better.

1997 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe

The 993 frequently finds itself on our pages due to its mix of beauty, refinement, and collectability. One of its persistent faults, if we can call it that, is that the 993 has never really become much of a value on the 911 market. Without being in pretty poor condition you won’t find one for less than $20K, as used to be the norm for the 911SC and 3.2 Carrera. Perusing ads it can be difficult to find examples below $40K for even the most standard Carrera Coupe. Thus, while the asking price for this 993 of $35,000 isn’t inexpensive it does stand as something of a value in the 993 range. So for someone who really wants to have a chance to experience one of these cars a higher-mileage example like the one seen here might be the way to go. Here we have an Arena Red 1997 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe, located in Massachusetts, with 111,737 miles on it.

1985 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet

Some cars will always hook me. Through a combination of a good leading picture and a particular model that, whether I realize it or not, happens to be just the sort of thing I’m looking for, certain ads draw me in and lead to further investigation. Sometimes the joy ends there. With others, like the car we see here, it ends up deserving the extra attention. Here we have a Black 1985 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet, located in California, with 53,115 miles on it. Black and Tan (or in this case, Black and Champagne) remains one of my all time favorite combinations and on a Cabriolet it works particularly well since the contrast is made more apparent once the top is dropped. This isn’t a striking combination so much as it is a classic combination. And on the 3.2 Carrera it’s a combination that shows really nicely. With warmer days nearly at hand now is just the time to get into an open-top car!

1982 Porsche 911SC Coupe

Turn the clock back one year and nearly every classic 911 we featured seemed caught up in a whirlwind of ever-escalating value. Cars that had long been the standard for value-conscious buyers were now being snapped up almost immediately once they were put up for sale. It was clearly a seller’s market for cars that probably had been undervalued for a long time and we were seeing the market correct itself. Much of this craze affected the 3.2 Carrera, but values of its predecessor, the 911SC, also increased quite a bit, especially for excellent low-mileage examples. Sitting here now, the market has stabilized for all but the absolute best cars, which gives those searching for a good driver-quality example reasonable benchmarks for evaluating their options. Prices are higher than they once were, but at least in relative terms the 911SC still represents a nice value for those looking to own a classic 911. The example we see here is a 1982 Porsche 911SC Coupe, located in Virginia, with 106,000 miles on it.

Tuner Tuesday: 1986 Ruf BTR Slantnose

One of the great things about this blog is that we keep a pretty good inventory of rare cars written up, so that when one looks familiar we can go back and check it out. This doesn’t always work, as occasionally we forget that we’ve written one up, such as the S6 Avant I managed to write up twice. However, both of today’s tuner cars appeared on these pages before in one form or another, and I managed to track both down. Later we’ll look at an Alpina B11 3.5 that was seen here five years ago, but with 332 made it was still a bit surprising that the same one popped up for sale. When it came to today’s Ruf BTR Slantnose – one of only five made – I was sure we’d seen it before, and I was somewhat right…
